Whether you’re designing automotive parts to create lighter, more fuel-efficient cars or creating office-space layouts that help foster employee interaction, generative design is the ideal cocreation partner. It helps solve complex architecture, engineering, and product-design problems faster; creates multiple design options; and doesn’t hog the office snacks.

But does it hog all the work? Not at all. Although generative-design software can pump out more design options than a designer or engineer can manually create in the same amount of time—thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) and unlimited cloud-computing power—it can also automate many routine tasks. And that leaves designers with more time for the fun stuff: exploring more creative outcomes, making decisions regarding style and aesthetics, and evaluating how people will experience the new product or environment.
