Andreas designs and builds 3D printers to explore new ways of structuring matter. With a particular interest in processes that manipulate traditionally immutable materials, Andreas gravitates to high-energy fabrication processes such as laser sintering of polymers and metals and the ceramic firing techniques in the Japanese folk pottery tradition. His explorations in digital fabrication include laser-layout structural folding, mesostructured mesh materials, low-cost prosthetic device design, and compliant mechanisms. Additionally, Andreas has worked with porcelain and Shigaraki-style clays to create functional wares inspired by traditional Japanese teaware.
