BKF has more than 400 staff using Autodesk software with Civil 3D at the core. Across the company there were large variances in staff skills including: Civil 3D knowledge and best practices; awareness of and ability to use peripheral software (Infraworks, Vehicle Tracking, Raster Design, etc.); use of available customizations including custom programming and templates. Opportunity was seen to improve information sharing, reduce duplicated effort, and produce consistent results more efficiently.

Project goals

The desired business outcome was a decrease in unbilled design software overhead time. To that end, the process improvements included: 1) Online topical training, covering company specific best practices 2) Introductory training on peripheral design tools including Infraworks, Vehicle Tracking and 3Ds Max 3) Update of their CAD Standards manual and templates 4) Consolidation and creation of custom routines and programming 5) New workstation images integrating all standards and customizations

Solution

Autodesk Solutions Used: Civil 3D, Infraworks, Vehicle Tracking, Raster Design, Navisworks, and 3Ds Max CAD Masters acted as the consultant for this project: 1) Developed and provided recorded training sessions covering prime topics in Civil 3D and introductions to peripheral design tools 2) Developed and consolidated custom tools in C# and LISP 3) Gave guidance on CAD Standards, templates, and deployment images including creation and setup of dwts, args, folder structure, and support file setup

Business outcome

The project, with CAD Masters’ delivered services, was successful in reducing unbilled design software overhead time. Qualitative outcomes included: 1) Consistent deliverables across the organization. Models and plans produced by BKF have taken on a singular and recognizable appearance. 2) Successful upgrade to latest version of design tools 3) Codification and communication of best practices, tool knowledge, and standards resulted in a more competent and confident userbase
