Preconstruction management

Course overview

Preconstruction management sets the foundation for project success long before construction begins. This course focuses on practical, BIM enabled workflows that align stakeholders, reveal risks early, and turn design intent into coordinated, buildable plans. Using Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), you’ll see how information, coordination, and commercial decisions connect during preconstruction.

You’ll start with core concepts and the role of the BIM Execution Plan (BEP), including how it defines BIM uses, responsibilities, information exchanges, naming conventions, shared coordinates, and coordination rules from early design through construction readiness.

Next, you’ll apply these concepts in ACC—setting up projects and folders based on the BEP, federating models, creating saved views, and using Model Coordination to review constructability, resolve clashes, and track Issues. These workflows support clear scope, solid bid packages, schedule alignment, and early risk mitigation.

The course then moves into approvals and commercial management, including organizing permit documentation, forecasting and tracking cash flow, assembling bid packages, and supporting contract review and award. Throughout, ACC provides alignment, traceability, and a dependable audit trail.

Whether you support preconstruction meetings or early project decisions, you’ll gain practical tools to create a clear, data driven preconstruction plan that strengthens control of cost, schedule, and risk.

After completing this course, you'll be able to:

  • Explain the role of preconstruction management in the construction workflow and related processes.
  • Describe how a BIM Execution Plan (BEP) defines BIM uses, roles, information exchanges, naming conventions, and shared coordinates.
  • Set up projects and organize documents in Autodesk Construction Cloud to support coordination, traceability, and decision-making.
  • Federate multidisciplinary models in ACC and prepare saved views to support coordination reviews.
  • Review constructability using Model Coordination, group clashes, and manage Issues to resolution.
  • Build and interpret a high-level cash-flow model tied to schedule milestones and subcontractor commitments.
  • Assemble bid packages, translate bid results into contract scope, and support collaborative contract review and award.

Teaching supplements

This video guide is designed for instructors to help them get started with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) in their classroom. It is assumed that you have Account Administrator access in ACC and a hub. The steps in the video should be followed so that students can use the datasets and follow along with the course videos.

Note: Assigning ACC licenses to students should be performed through ACC (https://acc.autodesk.com/) and NOT the Autodesk Account page. Assigning licenses to other products such as Revit, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Cloud Worksharing, etc. is performed through the Autodesk Account page (https://manage.autodesk.com/).

Resources just for educators

Teach this course in the classroom or assign it to students as homework. Download the provided instructor guide for teaching the course content in the classroom, with learning objectives and estimated times for demonstration and practice.

Additionally, lecture slides, exercise files, and a grading rubric for the challenge in the course are provided. Students can either work in teams or solve the challenges on their own.
