Streamlined and More Efficient Plasma Cutting with Fusion 360

Streamlined and More Efficient Plasma Cutting with Fusion 360

Customer challenge

Metal Product is a fabricator of metal constructions and electrical parts and equipment for low and medium voltage applications. Their process quite often begins with a 3D model of a part or assembly prepared by their clients in various modelling tools and could be delivered in a host of different file formats. Due to such a diverse range of input formats, importing models, processing them and preparing them for production on CNC plasma cutters was a process full of unpredictable challenges. Such a disconnected process was a source of additional difficulties when adjustments were needed during the production. In order to improve their efficiency, the company wanted to streamline the process and increase the stock material utilization.

Project goals

In an effort to simplify the process, our client was looking for a solution which would enable them to work with models in various input formats in a consistent and predictable manner. Sheet metal parts should be easily identified, flattened and prepared for plasma cutter. To reduce complexity, the number of software tools required has to be minimal and connection between the model and the cutting instructions should be maintained throughout the process to improve the ability to respond to requests for production time adjustments.

Solution

The chosen solution was based on Autodesk Fusion 360 complemented with the Nesting & Fabrication Extension. We developed the necessary post processors for client’s Microstep and IQM plasma cutters. The input models from various CAD tools in their original format can be used in Fusion 360 and adjusted if necessary through direct modeling. Flattened sheet metal forms are optimally laid out on stock material with the Nesting extension. Fabrication CAM tools in Fusion 360 are used to generate toolpaths and through custom developed post processors G-code is created for each plasma cutter involved.

Business outcome

The greatest improvement this solution brought to Metal Product is a streamlined and more coherent process relying on a single easy to use tool all the way from import of CAD model to production on plasma cutters. The optimized process has shortened the time needed for production preparation, greatly decreased the number of errors undiscovered before the production, and reduced the waste of material. All this resulted in better use of time and material and increased the throughput with the given capacity.

Conclusion

Fusion 360 with complementing extensions and post processors is a great platform for specific needs of machining industry. Regardless of process involved – plasma, laser or water jet cutting, milling, turning or combination of them – there is an outstanding opportunity to make it faster, simpler and more efficient.
