New Generation of 3D Cartography for Smart Cities

New Generation of 3D Cartography for Smart Cities

Customer challenge

Viamapa, is a Portuguese company created in 2004 intervening in all fields of Topographical Engineering, Cartography, Geodesy and Hydrography, and now is part of Geosat Group. With the diversification of markets and technologies, the team felt the need to change our production process so that the construction of infrastructure and equipment was carried out, as much as possible, and adopt BIM, in order to reduce execution time and the number of resources on project site.

To achieve this, Viamapa looked for a tool with which they could define their projects down to the smallest detail. Our choice was the Autodesk Civil 3D.

The use of BIM for 3D modeling allows for the early identification of problems that will often only be identified in its execution phase, which would lead to delays and coverage costs.

Project goals

Innovation: We invest in research and development for the new generation of 3D Cartography for Smart Cities, which will allow Autonomous Navigation.

Innovation and continuous improvement have been one of the main objectives of the company, to offer, from the initial phase to the final phase of the project, all the know-how obtained over these 20 years of experience. To do so, it was necessary to purchase Autodesk Civil 3D, which has a fantastic range of tools:

Cartography, Topography, Bathymetry, Land and Net Registration

Combining state-of-the-art equipment for data collection, processing and analysis, with qualified professionals

Engineers from various quarters, Surveyors, Geographers, Geologists, Hydrographers, Architects

As a complement, we use the Autodesk Civil 3D that allows the following features:

  • Greater data protection;
  • Prevention of duplication of information;
  • Data centralization in the Cloud, that prevents unnecessary internal storage;
  • Existence of a common file project allows changes (styles, layers, materials, etc.) to be replicated at once for all users;

Solution

One of the main Autodesk Civil 3D tools on our business area is the 3D modeling which plays a key role in:

  • Detection and geo-referencing of underground networks
  • Working with Scanners and 3D modeling
  • BIM for buildings and infrastructure
  • Dynamic Acquisition HD Cartography
  • Working with Drones (UAV)
  • Doing Topography projects
  • Inspection and monitoring of buildings and infrastructure

Business outcome

All of the new projects are carried out using this software, and the impact on the results obtained is visible. This allowed us to speed up the entire process of the work, minimizing errors, exporting data for analysis and creating 3D visualization links.

The points above allow us to discuss any doubts with the client and define more rigorously processes that facilitate the execution of the project.

Conclusion

Viamapa managed, with the help of Autodesk Solution Provider PH Informática, to implement the Autodesk Civil 3D facing our needs as well as a custom configurations and libraries. This partnership allowed accelerating production methods, reducing materials and cost times, more rigorous planning and shorter response time to the customer.

It is indisputable that the acquisition of Autodesk Civil 3D allowed us to embrace new projects, with the certainty that we were able to be more competitive than before.

With this path of innovation and continuous improvement, we meet the objectives and values of Viamapa: Innovation, Quality, Trust and Ethics.

BIM Implementation

Grupo Norvia is an engineering consultant with more than 30 years activity on several levels, from multidisciplinary engineering studies to supervision and global project management. The national and international experience and the will to be at forefront of the latest technological trends in the AEC industry empowered the emerging importance of the digital transition from traditional work methodology, supported by Autodesk AutoCAD, to the Autodesk Building Information Modelling methodology.

AEC Collection at the Service of Topography and Scan to BIM at Gaiurb

Since 2002, Gaiurb has had the vast majority of its topographic and cartographic information based and supported in the CAD DWG format. Taking into account the entire base file structure for projects, as well as the production of projects and by-products in the respective vector formats, the need to have a broad and robust system based on Autodesk technology was identified. From the survey phase of the real situation to the final phase of designing a project or complementary analyses, the integration of data and computer platforms is a fundamental and preponderant factor for the organization. Technological integration and data interoperability is the biggest challenge for the entire structure at all levels of municipal management.
