Success Story

AEC Collection at the Service of Topography and Scan to BIM at Gaiurb

AEC Collection at the Service of Topography and Scan to BIM at Gaiurb

Customer challenge

Since 2002, Gaiurb has had the vast majority of its topographic and cartographic information based and supported in the CAD DWG format. Taking into account the entire base file structure for projects, as well as the production of projects and by-products in the respective vector formats, the need to have a broad and robust system based on Autodesk technology was identified.

From the survey phase of the real situation to the final phase of designing a project or complementary analyses, the integration of data and computer platforms is a fundamental and preponderant factor for the organization. Technological integration and data interoperability is the biggest challenge for the entire structure at all levels of municipal management.

Project goals

The need to have a solution that allows the management of all topographic data resulting from surveys, as well as its integration with point cloud data, visualization, manipulation, export, as well as the production of projects of topographic and cartographic bases is the biggest challenge. Having a technology that allows you to optimize the visualization and management of data is essential for faster execution of the necessary work.

Since the end of 2021, with the final implementation of Laser Scanning technology, it has been necessary to have a set of platforms that allow reading topographic data and working in an integrated way and without the need to convert intermediate formats.

Solution

The product which best responds to Gaiurb's needs is the Autodesk Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection. The reference products for carrying out daily tasks are Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map, Revit and Recap Pro.

The standard workflow that leverages the products presented above is based on the following steps:

i) Preliminary and conceptual study: AutoCad Map and Civil 3D-based on basic cartographic information and orthophoto maps, a preliminary analysis of the area under study is possible, allowing the production of cartograms, digital terrain models and profiles.

ii) Topographic Base Elements: With the aim of characterizing the site in detail, after the field survey and processing phases, all data are integrated in order to produce a topographic map for 1:100 detail scales (Civil 3D). The integration of topographical data, with the data of lidar from Laser Scanning or Aerial Photography by UAV, in ReCap Pro allows the preparation of the adequate base for the project.

iii) The project: Using AutoCAD MAP and/or Revit, it´s possible to produce both studies (urban planning and design of buildings or public spaces). Revit is used for 3D modeling of building and public space.

Business outcome

Technological and data integration allows for greater optimization of technological resources, as well as optimization of the execution time of design and planning tasks. By avoiding intermediate format conversions, it is possible to produce the final products based on an adequate and standardized data model, as well as to provide the entire organizational structure of the municipality with a single and interoperable data model and format. The entire municipal structure uses data models for consultation and the design drawing in DWG format.

Conclusion

The use of a DWG, RCP format, even though it is proprietary and considered for universal use, is a significant asset for the entire structure of municipal services. All technicians have access to all vector data sources in the same reference system (EPSG) and in the same format, which allows the design of new projects in a unique and interoperable way with historical information in the same format, allowing above all all the speed of processes and a more effective response to requests.
