Prefabrication and modular construction has become increasingly significant in building design and construction management. Building Information Modeling (BIM) combined with fabrication has enabled integrated architecture and engineering workflows that can embrace these technologies. In industrialized production, the digital model becomes the product. For architecture and engineering professionals, drawing sets rely upon symbology and design intent, not on specifics of construction and fabrication. This class will present best practices and procedures for modular off-site fabrication. Focused workflows will be demonstrated using the architectural design and documentation capacity of Autodesk® Revit® software combined with the manufacturing capabilities of Autodesk® Inventor® software. The digitally fabricated model produced by Inventor directly informs both the architectural design and the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) components. Autodesk® Navisworks® software will then be applied as a tool to explain industrial production techniques, documenting prefabricated construction methodologies.
- Manage an intricate network of linked Revit files, combined with Inventor components
- Understand basic principles of architectural modularization in BIM
- Model repeatable building units in Revit
- Compile the information necessary for fabrication and architectural documentation in Revit and Inventor
Ian Atkins has established himself as an expert architectural coordinator & digital designer within the architectural and manufacturing industry. He has developed innovative BIM techniques for core AECO teams and defined workflow protocols for several award winning projects. As Firmwide BIM Application Manager for KPF, Ian has applied digital design & documentation techniques through various softwares and cross-trade communications. He has developed innovative protocols and standards for several different BIM platforms and disciplines, determining the methods for IPD through 3D modeling, Time planning, Cost analysis and Facilities Management techniques. Prior to KPF, Ian served as Director of A&E at Kullman Buildings Corp, a modular construction company where he was a leader and innovator in BIM. He oversaw the design & documentation deliverables on a diverse range of projects including healthcare, multi-story mixed use, hospitality, schools, data centers, & higher education buildings.
