In this session, we’ll look at ideal workflows for using Revit software, and how to avoid key time-wasting traps, as discovered the hard way by an experienced Revit software-using mechanical engineer. We’ll examine opportunities for fundamental changes to overall workflow, as well as how to improve current methods. Emerging features such as Insight 360 software are shown as a great opportunity for engineers and architects to collaborate during initial design stages and to calculate heating and cooling loads. You’ll receive advice about how to control level of detail and coordination, particularly at early design stages. We’ll also give some specific technical tips and tricks to help engineers get the most out of their Revit software systems and spaces. Much of a mechanical engineer's time can be spent doing calculations by hand, checking schedules against layouts and schematics, and manually sizing pipes and ducts; this can be very boring, and is likely to lead to inconsistencies in your deliverables. Revit software has the capability to link your 3D model, drawings, schedules, and calculations all together in one place, saving you precious time that should be spent on designing rather than adding up. This class will use live demos and presentation material to showcase new features like analytical pipe connectors, and old ones like pipe sizing, treatment plans, and calculations in families. You will also see some examples of Dynamo scripts and add-ins that we have developed to speed up our design processes and add intelligence to our models. Real project examples are used to show automation from concept design right through to detailed design, including space data, thermal loads, system connection, and sizing.

Many of the products we design and finally use are developed in mechanical CAD software. However, in almost all products, you’ll also find an electronic part. Without them, most products would be pointless. With the two Autodesk programs Fusion 360 software and EAGLE software, these two worlds grow together. This class will provide insight into the world of electronics. We intend to explain very basic things: What is a printed circuit board (PCB) and how is it manufactured? Which electronic components are used? How is an electronic layout created in EAGLE and how can a mechanical engineer use, change, and create a layout in Fusion 360? These basic questions will be explained using some illustrative examples.

This course is for mechanical engineers, industrial designers, architects, and software engineers looking to control objects wirelessly or gather data from devices or systems remotely. Spend time with us learning to add Wi-Fi to your next project! Using Eagle, we will build a small sensor-based system that posts data to the cloud and responds to commands from your browser. Some familiarity with embedded software platforms, including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar will be helpful but is not required. Familiarity with breadboarding concepts will also be helpful.

To compensate, mechanical engineers and designers must engage with related disciplines earlier in the design process. In many cases, understanding the performance of the design at these early stages is crucial to facilitate such collaboration. The Inventor Team is investigating tools and technologies that will enable mechanical engineers to characterize and understand the performance of a design much earlier in the design cycle; encapsulate such "Performance Models" in such a way that other design disciplines can capitalize on them; use these models to ensure that the mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and even controls-engineering designs meet machine requirements; use the outcome of these "Performance Models" to size both purchased and fabricated components. This roundtable will enable you to influence this exciting technology, and it will help us understand your workflows and needs.

This class will cover the use of filters and view template to create trade-specific views in regards to the display of pipe and duct work in Revit software. Once the basic workflow is established, we'll see how we can automate this very tedious process with Dynamo software, and, finally, how we can use Microsoft Excel to create a dashboard to control the creation and view settings of trade-specific drawings. This is very useful in large projects with a very high number of mechanical systems and trades. We need a central way to handle this information. Also, as projects are ever changing, this method needs to enable changes as the project progresses.

Revit families were created to communicate with each other; we can push or gather data via their connectors, which lets us create some very powerful families and schedules. Using this data, we can coordinate across disciplines and decrease errors and design time. Mechanical can input values and provide electrical with the necessary information to properly design their systems with minimum effort. Parameters can be viewed as discreet bits of information you plug in to your equipment to populate your schedule-an arduous, tedious task. But if you look at how all those bits of data can affect all the other bits of data, and you can get them talking to each other, you'll have a useful design tool. Since engineering is chock-full of formulas, we'll look at how we can use these formulas to drive our parameters and streamline the design process. We'll look at how mechanical elements push data upstream to help calculate electrical loads.

With products becoming smarter and more connected, the need for an integrated Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is paramount. This class will introduce the first-ever cloud connected ECAD to MCAD workflow. We will discuss how EAGLE and Fusion 360 can work side by side to create schematics and generate board layouts from 3D CAD geometry and accurate 3D representations of PCBs to create enclosures within Fusion 360.
