In this hands-on lab, you experience the step-by-step workflow between Revit® and Showcase software. Learn how to quickly and easily transform digital prototypes or architectural designs into compelling imagery, movies, and real-time presentations. This class is an introduction to Showcase. If you have never used this software before or have used it only a few times, this class is for you. We also discuss Importing models from other sources such as Inventor®, AutoCAD® and 3ds Max® Design software.

A good model is important in a BIM (Building Information Modeling) workflow, and equally important is generating a good set of construction documents, complete with detail drawings. After mastering basic modeling in Revit software, many users hit the wall and struggle with this vital aspect of project delivery. This hands-on lab will teach you how to bridge the gap between modeling and detailing, taking full advantage of the 3D model and adding 2D embellishments combined with display modification to create your construction details.

This class will showcase studies of innovative workflow practices that will shave time off of labor and result in up to 25% savings on material. We will show workflows with material tracking using level of development (LOD) 400 practices. We will address material procurement, handling, and shipping techniques. We will demonstrate how we train and how to implement precision cutting automation with material optimization workflows. Attendees will encounter methods of using CAD, Revit software, Navisworks software, and Total Station software in order to achieve these cost reductions. This class will introduce the attendees to the current Revit workflow for calculating structural loads using Revit software and their limitations. As the roof gets more complicated, it is difficult to calculate the rain and snow volume using the traditional Revit workflow. By integrating this logic to Dynamo, we can increase the efficiency and usability of this logic. We will demonstrate how to use the architectural model to automate the rain load and snow load on irregular roofs. We will show how to consider roof slopes and relationships between drainages to calculate rain and snow volume for irregularly shaped roofs. Further, we will demonstrate how we can expand the workflow to automate the same for wind and seismic loads. At the end of the class, attendees will learn an efficient workflow to automate the structural load calculation and annotation in Revit with click of a few buttons using Dynamo player, thus reducing 1-2 days of work to less than an hour.

Wondering how BIM (Building Information Modeling) can connect engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC)? Discover the manufacturing-like workflows of an EPC contractor. This class will showcase the essential benefits obtained by the adoption of BIM in a well-known international company specialized in industrial, chemical plant, and oil and gas. Learn how the company, starting in particular from the Civil Department, has adopted BIM, and how they currently use BIM to manage data such as key quantities, bills of materials, fabrication, and feasibility planning. After a brief introduction to the company, we will present tips and tricks that cover hot topics, including data exchange in a multidisciplinary environment, file and cost management, and quality control. Finally, we will give detailed explanations of how to manage processes through Revit software, Dynamo, BIM 360 software, and Navisworks software by way of several examples from real EPC projects. This session will feature Revit, Dynamo, and BIM 360, along with in-house tools and Navisworks.

Very few classes focus on how Dynamo software could be used in the structural design office from a practical level—until now. This class will build on the previous year’s top-rated class entitled “Dynamo for Structure,” and will give more hands-on experience to the attendees and teach them how to use more Dynamo examples to help model structural elements in Revit software. If you model any type of Revit structural elements, then this class is for you. This class will be exciting, and we will make modeling structure in Revit fun again! No Dynamo experience is needed and you do not have to have taken the previous year's course. Only Revit guru status is required.

In this session we will review how technology advancements and innovative products are driving modularity in the AEC space. We will showcase how manufacturers, engineers, and contractors are leveraging technology, and discuss the impact it is having on their bottom line. 

This roundtable discussion will focus on topics that are critical to the rebar process when an integrated delivery approach is used. Engineers, detailers, fabricators, installers, and general contractors are invited to come and share their thoughts about what is important to ensure the success of a cast-in-place concrete project. We will discuss new tools such as the Revit software-aSa link as a means to discover what future improvements are coming to Revit software. We will also discuss material, fabrication, delivery, installation, and general constructability issues that commonly arise for a variety of concrete systems. And we will examine strategies for maintaining quality and ensuring productivity of all stakeholders.

A common challenge for an interior design firm is working as a subconsultant for an architecture firm and keeping room names, numbers, and finish information updated to populate room finish schedules. This is easily managed if you use Dynamo software to read information from the linked model and synchronize information in the interior design model. Another common struggle is coordinating annotated information, room finish schedules, and material finish legends. A number of work-arounds exist, though all produce complicated workflows and still leave a disconnect between what is actually modeled and what is documented. A similar method to syncing room information from a linked model can be used to read finish information in a Revit model to populate the room finish schedule. This presentation will be a combination of Microsoft PowerPoint and a live demonstration of techniques that BSA LifeStructures interior designers employ to improve the process of designing and documenting in Revit software with assistance from Dynamo. We'll use PowerPoint to diagram the flow of information from phase to phase, or modeled content to construction drawing, followed by live demonstrations using Revit and/or Dynamo. Topics will include synchronizing room finish schedules with modeled materials, connecting rooms from linked models, coordinating items from linked models such as signage for doors or light fixtures, coordinating data external to Revit such as room data sheets or FFE requirements, and working through the design phases. This class will also cover finish drawings, signage drawings, and furniture drawings, with a focus on synchronization of information for producing a visualization-ready model while reusing those efforts to produce construction documents.

Texture creation has never been so easy or so powerful since the release of Allegorithmic's Substance for 3ds Max® and Maya®. In this class, we begin by examining the Substance Player and how it can be used to preview and manipulate your Substance textures. We also explore the vast library of pre-built shaders. We learn how to generate texture simple bitmaps, which are ideal for Autodesk applications, such as Revit-based software, AutoCAD®, InfraWorks™, and Showcase®, which do not yet support Substance shaders directly. Next, we dive into 3ds Max and Maya and explore the true power of Substance and learn how to create simple and complex shader networks for compelling materials. Finally, we wrap up by learning several optimization techniques to enhance the Substance workflow such as bitmap scaling and hardware and software rendering.

Soon after the successful launch of PokEmon GO, Royal HaskoningDHV started exploring the applicability of Augmented Reality in engineering consultancy. Early 2017 we presented our first HoloLens Showcase of Heerlen Railway Station in the Netherlands. Initially intended as a new way to present our deliverables to customers, our showcase drew curiosity from a much wider audience: ranging from residents living nearby the railway station to customers new to our business. This led to a development agenda to allow for more integrated design and engineering as well as virtually-guided construction and maintenance. Moreover, we believe that AR will allow us to fully engage both clients and users in a truly co-creative design process. In short, interactive design and engineering with Augmented Reality. Together with various launching customers and in partnership with Cadac Group, we are now developing a suite of applications to allow both engineering consultants and relevant stakeholders to truly interact with holograms including shared view solutions to work from different locations, holographic libraries to select objects and solutions from, and synchronisation solutions to push designs back to Revit. These and similar developments and closely tied to the emergence of Digital Twins for the Built Environment in which Royal HaskoningDHV is seeking to take a leading role. At Royal HaskoningDHV, we believe Augmented Reality will disrupt the AEC industry and will play a pivotal role in realising Digital Twins. We are eagerly looking forward to share our AR development endeavour and deliverables at Autodesk University to a broad audience.

This presentation will focus on the lifecycle management of the UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital, from design through facility maintenance (FM) and operations, by using Building Information Modeling (BIM) deliverables, and using the integration among various compatible Autodesk programs, processes, and workflows. This class will be a case study of the solutions used to fabricate and construct a $110 million, 220,000-square-foot hospital in 14 months, as well as a live demonstration of the programs that support interoperability (Revit software, Navisworks software, BIM 360 Field software, BIM 360 Glue software, BIM 360 Ops software, and ARCHIBUS). Although the integration of these programs provided tremendous benefits to the construction team, facility managers, and owners through Lifecycle BIM and Quick Response (QR) Codes, there were still challenges to overcome. Attendees will gain experience through applying lessons learned, tracking accountability with complex systems and distributed software programs, and exploring how collaboration was vital to the project's success.
