The ultimate objective of BIM (Building Information Modeling) is to design, construct, and operate more-efficient infrastructures with less impact to the environment. SYSTRA R&D teams developed two web-based solutions—CARBONTracker and SAFEbyBIM—to better simulate carbon emissions and reduce safety risks on projects using Forge and ArcGIS. This presentation will immerse you in a virtual demonstration of a project design review to show the benefits that BIM can provide ecodesigners and safety managers in their daily challenges to reduce these environmental and human impacts. The presentation will be in two parts. First, there will be a description of both applications’ functionalities. Then, we’ll perform a simulation of a design review around an asset to show how these solutions can support a more efficient integration of these disciplines into design processes by being able to extract the BIM data that’s created to provide the right information to the design teams in order to make design decisions taking into account carbon and safety impacts.

Virtual Reality can be quite isolating if only one person can experience it all alone. Meanwhile, Social VR brings people together virtually and provides a unique opportunity for collaboration that is both immersive and interactive. Social VR collaboration is a perfect solution for the distributed project team, where team members could be physically located in different cities, states, or even countries. Using Social VR, a project team could meet while immersed in the VR model. They can review the project model while taking a virtual tour together. This session will show you how to turn your isolating VR model into a Social VR model, and create a Social VR experience where multiple participants can chat with each other, review the project virtually and take some selfie all while immersed in Virtual Reality. During the class, we will go from Revit, to 3D Max, to Unity with Photon VR for network, and create some avatar prefabs and experience the VR using Vive and Rift VR system. This presentation concerns BAM's Wharfedale Locality Hospital PFI project and the process they undertook in a “retro” Building Information Modeling (BIM) to facilities management (FM) Process. The presentation will present how BAM see the business value in BIM to FM in their current facility management buildings, along with any future building contracts they undertake. We will focus upon the importance of engaging the FM operational staff at the earliest opportunity and the reasons why this is important to ensure they receive what they require to operate and maintain a facility. It will include the steps undertaken regarding the tools utilized to gather the operational requirements and the necessary data fields required for the assets from the BIM model. We will present all tools and processes, from design to operations, as well as the importance of the classification of the data in the operational FM environment. We will present business metrics and return on investments to prove the value in a retro BIM model for this facility. We will also look at futures for BIM to FM.

Architectural plans created with Revit software present a unique set of challenges when importing data into real-time interactive experiences using Unity or other game engines, whether targeting desktop, mobile, web, or XR—augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), or mixed reality (MR). This course will discuss different methods used to export 3D models and BIM (Building Information Modeling) data out of Revit and prepare it with 3ds Max software for importation into a Unity game running on the Magic Leap. We’ll survey various tools and techniques used to optimize and prepare the models for efficient experiences on low-power AR or VR devices, while maintaining access to the BIM data right through to the final Unity game experience. You’ll also learn how you can use the Forge Design Automation API to automate this process with very little programming.

This lecture will cover the lessons learned from applying Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology to the Intermodal Terminal Facility Construction Project at the Orlando International Airport, which is a part of a $3.1 billion expansion. We'll review how BIM was used to cut costs and increase productivity in the field, as well as where BIM fell short of expectations and what was learned from those experiences. When switching to Revit MEP Fabrication Parts, one of the first hurdles you need to cross is understanding how to get services and service templates configured in Fabrication software. Knowing how to navigate the services in Fabrication is key. You’ll be surprised by what little customization is required to get a basic service to function correctly in Revit software. Many of the settings that Fabrication CADmep software and Fabrication ESTmep software require are not necessarily required when using these services in Revit. We’ll cover how to deal with issues of connectivity and routing while in Revit and what changes to the database will improve routing and product selection. At the end of the class, you’ll be able to take full advantage of the design-to-fabrication feature in Revit to convert engineers’ design models and reduce coordination time needed to fabricate.

Contemporary shifts in technology and environmental concerns are changing the circumstances of building performance. Integrated teams that employ interdisciplinary design and construction personnel are responding to this changed set of conditions. The foundation of interdisciplinary architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) practices begins with the education of the next generation of AEC practitioners. In this class, we will discuss how students engaged in an iterative design and learning process build knowledge and communication skills toward an integrated design-build studio. This integrated design-build studio uses a series of assignments housed in dedicated design labs where students solve realistic design problems. Faculty-implemented Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies and established ecological accounting methods increase interaction and innovation in the interdisciplinary design-build studio.
