Instead of starting with a blank drawing or model, this class will investigate how codified design knowledge can be used to give a better starting point to MEP engineers. This class will discuss ways to augment the existing conceptual design process of MEP engineering using optioneering, generative design, and cloud computation. Using Dynamo and Hypar, engineers can improve the way they conceptually design 3D models and airflow diagrams. The process will rapidly produce different mechanical system configurations based on varying sites, solution metrics, and architectural inputs. We’ll also look at how Forge and the Revit API can be used to assist in model creation and data synchronization.

Combine logic, geometry, math, and BIM (Building Information Modeling) with Dynamo visual programming. We'll use Dynamo to drive a Revit document and interoperate with other applications, data sources, and modeling tools. If you already have some experience with Revit and are looking to expand its capabilities with computation, this workshop is for you. Basic understanding of computer programming and scripting is helpful, but not required. This is a full-day class, including networking opportunities over breakfast, lunch, and drinks. Participants will share one computer for every 2 people to encourage dialog.

Ensuring that data stays at the center of the design-to-construction process, as well as connecting that information across architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) disciplines, can lead to significant efficiency gains for the industry. In this class, we’ll explore how to seamlessly integrate and transfer data across a building retrofit process—from on-site survey to structural retrofit design to project visualization and construction documentation. Learn how a team of Autodeskers and engineers from Build Change—a nonprofit organization that helps communities design and construct more-disaster-resistant buildings—used Dynamo to: connect survey data from a third-party application to Revit software; automate the creation of 3D as-builts, retrofit designs, and construction sheets; streamline structural engineering analysis; and provide project owners with an interactive visualization of the final design—and how these concepts and skills can be applied beyond the building retrofit process.

It is no small thing to leave a mark on our fast-changing, complex world. As architects, we design for people in one of the most permanent design fields. This lasting impact makes inclusive design our foremost value and responsibility. To do this, we need to develop a deep awareness of the social, cultural, and environmental needs of the people we serve. The proliferation of the digital toolset has given us the ability to transcend traditional architectural practice for the first time in generations. Capitalizing on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), we have the ability to better understand the people who inhabit our buildings by simulating experiences related to vision, mobility, and communication. We can’t expect to truly comprehend an individual’s contextual and cumulative experiences, but if we are able to tap into others’ abilities and sensorial comprehension, our designs can be more sensitive to the broader community and cause fewer impediments in the built environment.

Come to this session to learn about workflow between Autodesk applications regarding how to generate an infrastructure Building Information Modeling (BIM) model. We will look at InfraWorks software as a conceptual tool, at AutoCAD Civil 3D software for project development, at Revit software to generate BIM elements, and at all the information aggregated in Navisworks software.

The traditional approach calls for engineers to produce both plan view and riser diagrams for plumbing work. This method calls for duplicated information. This is both wasteful and error prone. To achieve a connected BIM (Building Information Modeling) project, we need a way to connect the plan views to the riser diagrams. This can be accomplished using 3D riser diagrams. This demo will cover how to use Revit tools to produce 3D riser diagrams. We will discuss all the benefits to using 3D risers and how to get your project managers on board with using them for construction documents. We will provide examples of how to create, annotate, and manipulate 3D risers to plot clearly and accurately. We will also touch on the typical issues and how to fix or prevent those issues from happening.

This class will describe how BuroHappold is using Dynamo with Revit to revolutionize their concept and schematic design phases. Visual programming has allowed us to use iterative design to show the influence of minute architectural changes to our MEP design. This allows us to communicate quickly, effectively, and visually with the entire project team. Automated zoning diagrams for heating, cooling, ventilation, electrical loads, and fire rating were generated iteratively. Additionally, Dynamo-powered automated calculations were utilized for plumbing pipe sizing, storm riser sizing, roof drain placement, and pressurization. We have also used the schematic level Revit model to accomplish space planning for risers and MERs. The utilization of Dynamo for Revit in early design has allowed us to deliver a faster, smarter, more creative, and better communicated building. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the limitless possibilities for Dynamo in early phases of design.

Those moments of “pushing the envelope” produced a veritable goldmine of tricks to coax InfraWorks to perform feats never expected. The goal of this session is to walk you through the top 10 tricks to bend InfraWorks to your will, helping you more effectively communicate your design intent and dazzle your project team and your clients.

As our clients realize the benefits that BIM (Building Information Modeling) can bring to facilities management (FM), we are progressively seeing more and more new design-and-build projects incorporating that all-important FM data. However, this leads to the question—what about our clients' existing facilities? New South Wales Health in Australia is currently in the process of moving their existing FM systems to a BIM-enabled system. Using the Prince of Wales Hospital Precinct in Sydney as a case study, this class will look at the advantages of utilizing the Revit database connector to manipulate large data sets for use by FM teams and building owners. We will also explore the potential of integrating the client's existing non-BIM FM database through the use of external relational databases, developing data-rich models, and ensuring consistency to enable a smoother transition to BIM for existing facilities.

Intended for intermediate to advanced AutoCAD Civil 3D software users, this class is designed to show land development professionals techniques and nuances for creating renderings and movies of their proposed projects. Utilizing many of the programs provided in Infrastructure Design Suite software (AutoCAD Civil 3D software, InfraWorks software, Revit software, and 3ds Max software), this class will consist of a live demonstration showing how to create compelling and grade accurate visualizations of your site designs. By treating InfraWorks 360 software as a “level builder” we will explore how to composite existing and proposed ground surfaces, build and apply coverages for pavement and pavement markings, and prepare tree surveys for 3D placement. Finally, we will explore the use of InfraWorks software models in real-time game rendering engines. By capitalizing on real-time engines, we can shortcut long rendering times to create accurate visualizations quickly.

This class will help you to explore preliminary bridge design options by using Bridge Design for InfraWorks 360 to visualize realistic civil structures in the context of the surrounding proposed site. Then Structural Bridge Design software is used to analyze the bridge in the cloud. We run a line girder analysis to verify the structural strength of the bridge girders and ensure they meet design standard requirements. Next we take the design into Navisworks software to uncover design problems and constructability issues more effectively and plan the construction sequencing. The InfraWorks software model is taken into AutoCAD Civil 3D software for precise grading. Then we round trip the model back into InfraWorks for better design communication.

Autodesk Labs: Project Boulder for InfraWorks 360 software brings together the immersive 3D design environment that is perfectly suited for immersive design and analysis. Project Boulder is a collaboration with Hydronia RiverFlow2D that provides the ability to simulate, visualize, and animate 2D flood events directly in the InfraWorks 360 software model environment while using the Hydronia RiverFlow2D computation model.

This class will cover the results of a pilot project between Autodesk, Inc., and the City of Vancouver. The project used InfraWorks software as a platform for rapid energy modeling. Rapid energy modeling is an efficient simulation process used for working with minimal and, in many cases, already-available city building data to quickly generate energy assessments. The ability to visualize and analyze at a range of scales, from the block to the neighborhood, assists in developing strategies to achieve sustainability objectives. We will present the most successful workflows and interoperability workflows between InfraWorks software and other Autodesk tools and services. Equally important, we will review the role of InfraWorks software as a public-engagement tool for energy and built-form issues, presenting complex data and issues in an accessible environment.

In this class, we will present perspectives and practical examples from our work on implementing an innovative approach to the construction, commissioning, handover, and lifecycle management processes for a facility. Consigli, the contractor on the project, is closely working with BRG, the building owner’s workplace management consultant. The project team mapped the owner's information needs from operations backwards into the construction and commissioning process, then implemented a set of technologies to deliver on this information flow. Key technologies in use include cloud- and iPad®-based field management software from Vela Systems®, Autodesk® Navisworks®, Autodesk® Revit®, and ARCHIBUS IWMS software. This class will explore each speaker's perspective on how this comprehensive approach to gathering and managing key systems and facilities data has changed both the process of delivering the project as well as the ultimate deliverable to the owner.

Globally, Architecture, Engineering and Consulting (AEC) firms are being asked to conform to mandates for the use of risk-based triple bottom line (TBL) analysis into design decisions starting in the conceptual planning stage. There is an awareness that infrastructure serves the public good and that lowest cost solutions are not sustainable, resilient, or adding to the quality of life of our society. The objective of infrastructure proponents in imposing TBL mandates is to shift from the lowest cost approach to a highest sustainable return on investment approach. The ability to monetize the public benefits of infrastructure via a triple bottom line economic assessment means that designs can be vetted more quickly, stakeholder push-back is reduced, and there is faster approval for the building of more sustainable and resilient infrastructure. In an engineering, procurement, and construction context, the project manager is asked to plan, monitor, and determine the project growth in order to manage the process, and eventually take remedial action if required. This difficult activity can be simplified and supported using Revit software and Dynamo software in order to automate the extraction of project progress curves. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to build your Revit models for the hosting of useful data that are than managed through Dynamo. The final outputs consist of reports that can be shared with management whenever requested or required. With this approach, the project can be accurately planned and continuously monitored, and its status can be easily shared. This class will show the application of this methodology on a large industrial plant currently under construction in the Middle East.

People often associate Dynamo software with designing complex parametric geometry; but Dynamo software is not just a tool for creating funky shapes, it’s a whiz at processing all kinds of data. This class will demonstrate various examples of how Dynamo software has been applied to common MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) engineering tasks to make them more efficient or more accurate. We will cover linking Revit Space naming utility information to Revit software families, using Dynamo software as an engine for MEP calculations, using Dynamo software to give you visual feedback on how hard equipment is being asked to work in your design, and using Microsoft Excel as a source of data for much of the above. You also needn't worry if you are completely new to Dynamo software (most MEP folk will be), as we will cover enough basics to get you going before we dive into the advanced stuff.
