With Revit software and Advance Steel software, structural engineers have tools available to enable them to take their designs past construction documents and into fabrication and construction. Construction schedules are faster, integrated project delivery is more common, and the Who, How, and When of structural shops drawings and fabrication models are changing. This presentation will show how US-based structural engineers who already create their design models and drawings with Revit software can use this same software to create shops drawings from their fabrication models for rebar, precast, and structural steel, and also create concrete lift drawings. Attendees will learn why these services are offered, how engineers can offer them, and best practices to follow to offer Building Information Modeling (BIM)-based structural shop drawings. The Dynamo extension is exciting, and the examples of its capabilities are awe inspiring, but are they practical in a real-world structural workflow? When an engineer creates a Dynamo script that resembles a bowl of spaghetti but will create some elaborate structure, is that practical and useful on a daily basis? While the farfetched and futuristic capabilities are exciting for probably 1% of projects, are they applicable to the other 99%? This session will focus on the other 99%. Due to the perception that it is only good for the crazy stuff, many structural engineers have not explored the Dynamo extension. Instead of ignoring a fantastic technology, engineers should learn ways to utilize Dynamo. This roundtable will offer an environment for structural engineers to share ideas for utilizing Dynamo to create innovative solutions to real-world, everyday problems. Note: This roundtable was created with structural engineers in mind, but all disciplines are welcome to come share practical applications of Dynamo extension. In the structural engineering industry, one of the challenges is reducing manual and tedious design tasks. Computational design tools such as Dynamo software give structural designers, engineers, and detailers the possibility to automate the creation of their deliverables to build structures with minimal energy. By doing so they spend less time on the repetitive tasks and more energy on the important parts of the design. In this class, you’ll learn how Dynamo can support design automation and computational modeling workflows for structural analysis and design of concrete and steel structures. You’ll learn about the appropriate packages to perform automation in your own daily workflows, and you’ll receive a set of teaching examples.

The collaboration features of Revit Structure software with Structural Analysis software were widely presented and experienced over the last years. However, despite all this featured software, many structural engineers still stay with their Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and their common pencil-and-paper routine. Not all software supports all codes, and very often it is faster to use those light spreadsheets than it is to work with heavy analysis software. This workshop will demonstrate how you can implement those spreadsheets into the parameter fields of a Revit software family, making use of the formula capabilities of the Revit software parameter and of nested families in order to make Revit software tasty for engineers. We will present examples that will include a reinforced-concrete footing design, a concrete retaining wall, timber joists designs, and a timber joist cantilever design. The workshop will also cover the documentation features and possibilities.

Structural engineers manage design changes and updates on a daily basis. Coordinating models and drawings while maintaining quality is always a challenge—not to mention working remotely or from home. The DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) principle is an effective approach to managing change during design and construction processes. Linking Revit models with structural analysis tools is one of the biggest benefits and challenges structural engineering teams still encounter. In this class, we will look at best practices for keeping structural models and workflows DRY, including linking models between Revit, Robot Structural Analysis software, and Advance Steel software; managing, coordinating, and sharing models using BIM 360 software; and reviewing construction and fabrication drawings for quality control with BIM 360. Incorporating some of these approaches into your workflows will help you keep up with the pace of change.

Everyday structural engineering workflows have repetitive tasks and data interoperability issues that can be resolved with a more parametric approach. Structural engineers and BIM designers can benefit by using Dynamo to develop custom tools to assist them to exchange data between internal and external software platforms, perform engineering calculations, optimize, and generate drawings. But then the question is how can engineers trust the calculations done by a custom Dynamo tool developed by another engineer? This class will demonstrate and discuss how we can make Dynamo assist engineers by presenting both basic and complex workflow examples. Further, the class will discuss some good practices and suggestions to convince your boss and your team to use Dynamo, and cover how to get past the “black box” problem.

In this joint presentation, Autodesk and SOFiSTiK will showcase the usage of the Revit API in an industrial application. SOFiSTiK, a development partner of Autodesk, builds its structural analysis application upon Revit software, providing a workflow that's fully integrated in building information modeling (BIM), from modeling to design and detailing. Structural engineers can analyze buildings in Revit, allowing them to be in constant connection with the intelligent model. The application uses the rich Revit API to extend and customize Revit functionality. We'll present different use cases, such as generating and modifying the analytical model or displaying analysis results. The direct connection with the intelligent model enables access to new insights, allowing informed decisions and more-efficient checking of the downstream detailing processes. Additional insights in how development teams of Autodesk and SOFiSTiK work together will complete this presentation.

As more and more structural engineers connect to and embrace building information modeling (BIM) workflows, there is increased demand for analytical collaboration in BIM. Engineers are looking to increase their analytical modeling productivity while ensuring that their physical and analytical models are well coordinated throughout the design process. In this class, you’ll learn about a completely new approach to structural analytical modeling introduced in Revit 2023 software. The rebar industry is highly fragmented where the design, detailing, fabrication and installation processes are not as integrated as with other trades such as the structural steel industry. In this presentation, structural engineers and detailers will learn how the industry can transform itself to design and deliver reinforced concrete structures with greater savings and quality to the owner by engaging structural engineers as the bridge between design, fabrication and construction.

The visual programming interface of Dynamo is enabling structural engineers with the tools to build optimized structures with minimal energy, and subsequently make their own design tools. Based on the Revit Platform, we can use our creativity to develop optimized structural systems using computational logic in an advanced building information modeling environment. This lab will teach participants how to create and iterate computational space frames with native Revit Framing elements and Adaptive Components, and how these can be used in structural analysis.

New tools in Revit software have enhanced the ability of structural engineers and detailers to create shop drawings and fabrication models for structural components. This class will demonstrate the Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow from structural models to fabrication to construction, all within Autodesk, Inc., software. We will learn how to take a structural engineer's Revit software model and turn it into a fabrication model and create shops drawings for rebar, steel framing and miscellaneous metals, and precast concrete. We will demonstrate new rebar modeling and annotation tools within Revit software, such as partitions and automatic bar-mark numbering, and we'll learn how to create rebar shop drawings and concrete lift drawings. We'll take steel framing from Revit software to Advance Steel software to detail the structural steel and miscellaneous metals and to create steel shop drawings. We will also show how to use parts, assemblies, and new structural framing and modeling tools to create precast concrete models and shops drawings.

Over the past few releases of Revit software, the API around Revit software structural elements and workflows has been significantly extended and augmented with additional capabilities such as structural code checking. These extensions enable developers and Building Information Modeling (BIM) experts to connect distinct tools (including loads and boundary condition preparation; structural analysis calculations; results analysis; code checking; and the creation, modification, and numbering of rebars) into a more interconnected workflow for structural engineers. This course will cover the use of Revit software structural tools and their corresponding APIs as a part of an overall BIM Solution for structural engineering calculations. It will include example workflows that developers may learn from and extend. We will illustrate simple concepts with code examples, and we will demonstrate live advanced techniques.

Creating the analytical representation of the structural model in the Revit environment can be seen as the easy part. The ability to constantly check your assumptions while dealing with the analytical representation, ensuring connectivity during creation and editing, to be notified when something has changed—especially when you’re not the structural engineer—is the one that modifies the project. These can be tedious and time consuming. In this class, you'll learn how to have an analytical model that constantly reflects the structural model, and how to automate the process and integrate the structural analysis in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) models.

As more and more structural engineers connect to and embrace BIM workflows, analytical collaboration in BIM has been an important category of the industry demands which translates to users' requirements around desired analytical modeling productivity and model coordination practices. In this hands-on lab class, you will learn how to make the most of the structural analytical modeling tools available in Revit 2024 software. You will gain valuable insights into various structural analytical modeling techniques, including tips and tricks for modeling automation, as well as how to effectively apply structural loads to your analytical model. Additionally, you will practice bidirectional workflows between Revit and analysis software, with particular focus on tips and best practices for collaboration with Robot Structural Analysis Professional.

Building on last year’s class "Taking BIM to the Limits for Structural Engineers and Technicians," we will present new workflows to increase productivity and minimize the waste caused in the design and documentation of structural engineering software. The class will focus on interoperability between analysis software and Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools, with a focus on Revit building design software as the primary documentation model. Making the most of parametric modeling tools—such as Dynamo software, Rhino software, and Grasshopper software—and optimization techniques using a wide range of tools, "Open BIM" can provide the foundation to successful collaboration. We will use real-world examples of complex and simple structures to demonstrate techniques and processes that will increase your efficiency and make the most of your team’s skill set, and examine what future skills your team might need to develop. This class will take a full building model from Revit software into RISAFloor, RISA-3D, RISAFoundation, and RISAConnection for an optimized structural design. We will focus on the newest addition to the RISA-Revit link with RISAConnection. The RISAConnection link can transfer your steel connections between Revit and RISA, and RISAConnection will do all the design checks and send the design details back to Revit. Now you can bring the entire structure into RISA, including the connections from Revit, and round-trip a full design back to Revit. This class will demonstrate the workflow from the perspective of the structural engineer between Revit and RISA.

This lab is designed for structural engineers and designers who struggle with non-economic and unsustainable structural designs. It is a cliché that in the world of structural engineering, too often we have to face lack of time and impossible design changes that negatively influence the sustainability of a construction. We are challenged in making several structural analysis models, finding the best solution, leading in design of economic structures. In this class you will discover a whole new way of modelling and analysing your structures. You will learn how to create complex structural steel models with Autodesk Dynamo and Autodesk Revit. You will discover how to rewire your analysis system using Autodesk Dynamo and Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis Professional. And finally you will get surprised how easily you can handle almost any complex rebar design in Autodesk Revit with Autodesk Dynamo.

Released in 2018, BHoM (Buildings and Habitats object Model) is an open-source platform that enables open workflows between many software packages within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Created by Buro Happold, this tool is especially relevant to structural engineers. With this tool, users can develop structural analysis models using Dynamo, Grasshopper, or Microsoft Excel, and then generate structural analysis models to most commercial software packages. Users can then generate Revit models for documentation. In this class, you’ll get an overview of the current state of structural analysis workflows and how BHoM can add value to your structural workflows. We'll also demo several analyses to documentation workflows to show the capabilities of the tool. Lastly, we'll show how users can run lifecycle analysis using BHoM to evaluate the embodied carbon of buildings.

Creating and customizing families is likely one of the most desired advanced skills in Revit software, and learning the Family Editor can be challenging—not only due to the vast amount of knowledge there is to be gained, but also because much of the resources to learn the Family Editor are focused on architectural examples and processes. This lab will provide an introduction into the Family Editor from a structural perspective. While we can apply the fundamental ideas to any discipline, we will structurally focus the examples.
