Power of Brand: The Story Behind Autodesk's First Ever Automotive Design Student Contest

That was the original idea behind our first ever design contest, "The Power of Brand.” Over four months, students showcased their creativity by creating a new vehicle inspired by a nonautomotive brand. Autodesk’s Alias and VRED software brought their design proposals to life. Automotive Parts Process and Fixture Design Automation, Integration, & Customization: Transforming Days into Minutes with Inventor!

In today’s digital world, the expectation of the automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) is to launch new models in the shortest possible time. This demand has shortened the time available for new developments, with no compromise in desired quality. This has also percolated to the component development partners. As necessity drives innovation, we at Sansera had no option but to follow suit. Converting the traditional manual design processes into automated ones is the solution for this. Through Inventor iLogic software, we automated process and fixture design of precision automotive parts and delivered in MINUTES that which used to take DAYS. This helped to achieve zero-error designs and seamless integration of process and fixture design activities, leading to first time right and ON TIME. The solution delivers the right design—independent of the designer’s skill set—using embedded rule-based logic.

Digital Design Validation: Seeing Real-World Parts Virtually and Accurately

Digital design validation—or digital DVAC as we call it at Rivian (more commonly known as AAR in industry)—is a process during which defective injection-molded plastic parts are analyzed, textured, and visualized to real-world accuracy to set expectations throughout the design cycle. Implemented early in the design process, digital DVAC allows visually problematic parts to be caught and fixed before any production tools or prototype parts have been produced, significantly saving cost and development times. This process further enables designers and engineers to work together to reduce the visibility of such defects through either design-based texture changes or part geometry fixes, improving the overall perceived quality and craftsmanship of the end product.
