Success Story

Updating Existing Inventor Custom Content and Design Data

Updating Existing Inventor Custom Content and Design Data

Customer challenge

Stahl Truck Bodies had amassed thousands of parts and assemblies from previous versions of Inventor. They were using a 10 year old custom program to populate iProperties in their design files. But, the implementation of a new ERP system shifted their needs. The new system required different properties from the old process. They needed a process that could migrate existing iProperty information, and populate new properties on existing and new parts and assemblies. They needed a flexible system.

Project goals

Primary project goals were identified as follows: 1) Eliminate the need to manually update Custom iProperty information for thousands of parts and assemblies. Update drawing Title Blocks and other related standards. 2) Enable Inventor Bill of Material (BOM) information to be properly imported to a new ERP system. 3) Create a system that could be maintained and altered by its users as the process evolved over time.

Solution

Consulting, Training, and Mentoring were provided to create and update custom content center parts and items, create and configure sheet metal rules, update drawing resources, and update existing drawing Title Blocks. Automation services using iLogic were created to enable rapid migration and creation of iProperties, drawing exportation, push of drawing properties down to assembly files, export of .dwgs to specified network location, and migration of existing drawings to the defined standard.

Business outcome

Stahl was able to automate the updating of Custom iProperties of thousands of parts and assemblies, drawing templates and related standards to allow Inventor Bills of Materials to be imported into Acumatica. Automating these tasks increased efficiency and eliminated errors that might have resulted if this information was updated manually. Stahl users were also trained in the workflow needed to make future changes eliminating the need to have changes made programmatically.

Conclusion

MESA’s services replaced an obsolete program with current tools (iLogic) to eliminate time-intensive, error-prone operations, while still being flexible and adaptable to future needs. The training and process optimization consulting was provided to ensure Stahl has the knowledge, capabilities and capacity to succeed in deploying a new ERP system compatible with Inventor BOM. This was done to make Stahl self-sufficient, saving the company hundreds of hours required to make changes manually.

Automate the Creation of Models and Drawings for New Catalog

Nord-Lock Group was in the process of launching a new product catalog and required fabrication drawings for the thousands of standard products that could be ordered through this new catalog. As the designs were new, all the fabrication models and drawings would have to be created. With the drafting department’s ongoing custom product workload, the standard catalog product designs would have to be created individually as they were ordered, typically outside of normal engineering capacity.

Automating the Creation of Shop Drawings

Walters & Wolf's Seattle area facility designs, fabricates, and installs curtain wall systems for commercial buildings.  For a given project, the design team may produce hundreds of detailed drawings, one for each segment of extrusion used in a curtainwall. Each of these drawings is used by the machinists in the shop to create the finished extrusion. The process of creating these from Inventor models is tedious, repetitive, and time consuming.
