Success Story

Vertical Engineering, an architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firm based in Thessaloniki, has long relied on BIM and Autodesk’s AEC Collection for architectural, structural, and MEP design. At BAU in Munich, the management team learned about MuM’s BIM Booster and took the opportunity to book training—in their native language—with MuM. The results were evident right from the first project.
Vertical Engineering is an engineering and consulting firm based in the Greek port city of Thessaloniki. Approximately 30 employees work in the fields of architecture, structural engineering, MEP design, permitting, construction, and project management. The projects include sophisticated residential buildings, hotels, office buildings, and energy infrastructure projects that stand out for their functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a key factor in the success of technically sound, high-quality projects.
BIM – Many Benefits, One Challenge
BIM enables Vertical to integrate and coordinate architectural, structural, and MEP design. Conflicts can be identified and corrected early on, while 4D and 5D simulations minimize costly errors and delays in both the design and construction phases. Digital twins ensure precise execution, real-time monitoring, and cost control during the construction phase. However, the Autodesk AEC Collection used at Vertical did not optimize all processes as desired – the team still had to perform some tasks manually. A tool for these tasks would be nice.
Building Blocks Instead of PowerPoint
BAU in Munich is a gathering place for BIM experts from Germany and abroad. A large team from Vertical also attended the trade show to network with others in person. At the Autodesk booth, instead of colorful, moving images and spectacular visualizations, there was a table with colorful building blocks: an invitation to creative, collaborative play. Everyone was surprised when someone joined the discussion with the Vertical team in Greek.
Straight to the point
As we assembled the building blocks, a conversation developed about the current demands of the construction industry in Greece. The analog blocks proved to be the perfect counterpart to the digital challenges at Vertical; the Greek-speaking stranger turned out to be a BIM specialist at MuM. A short while later, the conversation continued at the computer.
The Solution: BIM Booster
“It quickly became clear to us that MuM’s BIM Booster would solve our biggest problems—and probably a few more as well,” recalls architect and BIM manager Paschalis Galanis. “However, it was important that the software be available in English and that the training be conducted in English—or better yet, in Greek.” MuM had answers to these challenges and implemented the software just a few weeks later at Vertical.
CDE Instead of Building Blocks
The training had barely ended when the solution had to prove itself: Vertical was awarded a contract for a technically complex multi-million-euro project in Athens. The client required a CDE—a common data platform for defect management—to ensure maximum transparency for all project stakeholders. The AEC Collection, which Vertical already uses, provides access to Autodesk Docs, a core component of the Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Autodesk’s CDE. The Vertical team tested Docs in day-to-day project work and decided to implement ACC, as ACC ensures that all data is consistently available from the design phase through completion to the building’s operation.
More automation – more reliability
The MuM BIM Booster integrates seamlessly into this software environment surrounding ACC and Revit—whether for a new major project or other projects. Vertical primarily uses the component library, 2D detailing, and automatic attribute assignment. The Booster imports the client’s parameters from Excel, assigns them to categories, and structures them by LOD levels; room schedules can be generated at the click of a button. This results in accurate content, clean labeling, and consistent data.
Planning time reduced by 30%
It takes an experienced user approximately 45 seconds to manually create and assign a single parameter. During that time, the BIM Booster imports the entire parameter list and processes it correctly. This reduces errors and duplicate work, speeds up model maintenance and drawing generation, and ensures consistent planning quality across all trades. Planning time is reduced by at least 30%. For Nikolaos Georgiou, member of the management team at Vertical, civil engineer, and BIM manager, the trip to Munich was more than worth it: “Here we experience the kind of collaboration we envision: open ears, expertise, an understanding of our tasks, and a clear vision for the future. The distance between Thessaloniki and Wessling doesn’t matter at all. The BIM Booster makes our daily work easier in many ways.”
