Success Story

Gaborone City Council (GCC) Department of Architecture and Buildings has some ongoing construction projects in Gaborone, and most recently the construction of six primary schools. As their construction projects took off,
GCC recognized a need to speed up their Architectural and Engineering design process. Through consultation and close collaboration with Autodesk Solution Provider Cougar Institute of Drafting and Design, GCC sought to find an optimal solution for their construction projects.
GCC had the following goals:
1. Purchase CAD software to start Architectural and Engineering designs for construction of school projects.
2. Source CAD software that can empower multidisciplinary teams with specialty toolsets and a unified project environment.
3. Improve multidisciplinary workflows for every project phase.
GCC sourced the Autodesk Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection from Cougar. Revit was the mostly used software because it has purpose-built tools for architecture, engineering, and construction disciplines. Architects and Structural Engineers were able to use the right tools for their professions and were able to work together in a unified modeling environment.
BIM process were followed when designing with Revit because there was better project coordination and collaboration with stakeholders, efficient workflows, 3D visualizations, which all resulted in improved project outcomes.
Design errors were minimal because in Revit relationship is established between building elements. When one element changes, other related elements change as well. For example, adding an element in a plan view, also displays it in all of the other views.
The primary business outcomes were as follows:
1) Better multidisciplinary team collaboration in a unified Revit modeling environment.
2) Minimal errors in the design process, resulting in good quality designs. No cost implications in the design process because errors were detected early before construction started.
3) BIM processes followed with ease during the entire lifecycle of a project (plan, design, build, operation and maintenance).
GCC was able to design and build with confidence using the integrated AEC tools and workflows. Autodesk Revit played a major role. There was better project coordination and collaboration with stakeholders, efficient workflows, 3D visualizations, and resulting improved project outcomes, which are some of the benefits of using BIM processes.

Migration from Microsoft Visio to AutoCAD Electrical
NTR, a technology company specializing in Electrical Engineering, purchased AutoCAD software to be used by their electrical designers and Engineers, mainly to create and modify electrical control systems, designing wiring systems and circuiting for their Electrical design projects. Initially, they were using Microsoft Visio to do their electrical designs and wiring diagrams for their projects. They faced challenges with documenting their designs and eliminating errors when using Visio. They contacted Cougar Institute of Drafting and Design for help with an Autodesk solution that could be used for Electrical Designs, and also used by other engineers of various professions in the company to complete their projects.
Software Supply and Installation
Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC), a company that provides housing, office and other building needs of the government and local authorities in Botswana, purchased AutoCAD licenses from Cougar Institute of Drafting and Design. The licenses were purchased for different departments such as Architects, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. They faced a challenge with activating the licenses on some of their machines and involved Cougar Institute of Drafting and Design to assist with the installations.
