Increase Moldflow productivity with hands on training

Increase Moldflow productivity with hands on training

Customer challenge

IMA (Indústria de Moldes de Azeméis) has been using Autodesk Moldflow for many years and all their users are certified. However, with the daily challenges and workload within IMA, often new functions in their daily used software, that is Autodesk Moldflow, goes unnoticed. Norcam as a Autodesk software provider challenged IMA to have one day training on the new functions of the latest Autodesk Moldflow releases.

Project goals

The goal of this project was to help IMA in increasing the productivity of their Autodesk Moldflow users, by taking advantage of the new version of Autodesk Moldflow, especially the new tools and new functions of Autodesk Moldflow.

Solution

Norcam delivered a one day training on the latest Autodesk Moldflow release. They pointed out what's new and how to increase productivity. This training was conducted in a training room, where it becomes a good place for Norcam to demonstrate the new functions of Autodesk Moldflow, and at the same time induce discussion among the Autodesk Moldflow users within IMA.

Business outcome

The session was very productive, not just because of the new functions of the latest Autodesk Moldflow release, but because of the discussion that took place during the training. This allowed the Autodesk Moldflow users of IMA to have the chance to share their experience and best practices among the users.

As a result, Norcam and IMA decided to repeat this session on a yearly basis.

Conclusion

The training session was unique because Norcam did not try to teach anything to the experienced users in IMA, who simulate with Autodesk Moldflow day in and day out.

Instead, Norcam managed to organize "a day off" training session for the experienced users, so that they could actually discuss and share their tips and tricks, as well as, get to know the latest functions of Autodesk Moldflow - something they normally don't have the time to catch up or explore with.

Virtualizing Metrology Classes with Autodesk PowerINSPECT and VirtualCMM

The Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the University of Aveiro offers a course in metrology and they actually own one premium coordinate measuring machine (CMM). However, it is not possible to give a class of 20+ students individual access to this machine. Also, having untrained people learning to handle a CMM on a hands-on approach might risk expensive damage to the machine. The teacher approached us, asking how they could train students in Autodesk PowerINSPECT, without giving the students direct access to the machine, but still giving them the full metrology experience.

Avoiding human error with Autodesk PowerMILL: Wrong tool diameter detection

The Spanish Moldmaker located in Galicia had a not so uncommon problem with their tools: because tools are shared by different machines, sometimes a human error occurs and the wrong tool is inserted in the tool magazine. While it is pretty easy to confuse a 8mm ball nose tool with a 10mm ball nose tool, especially when working under pressure, the resulting damage is normally very difficult to correct. Often the whole part has to be scrapped. Matrigalsa approached us and asked if we could help them prevent these human errors.

Introducing Simulation in the Engineering Classroom

The Metallurgy and Materials Science Department of the Engeering Faculty with the University of Porto readjusted their courses and created a new course dedicated to simulation. The master degree students came with a slightly diverse engineering background and little to none CAE knowledge. The challenge was to provide a classroom with 30 students with a CAD and a CAE software, enabeling the teacher to introduce a broad arrray of simulation types, while allowing the students to master challenges and even deliver a product development project, which meets predefined specifications.
