Success Story

The Metallurgy and Materials Science Department of the Engeering Faculty with the University of Porto readjusted their courses and created a new course dedicated to simulation.
The master degree students came with a slightly diverse engineering background and little to none CAE knowledge.
The challenge was to provide a classroom with 30 students with a CAD and a CAE software, enabeling the teacher to introduce a broad arrray of simulation types, while allowing the students to master challenges and even deliver a product development project, which meets predefined specifications.
The goal of this project was to provide students with indepth knowledge about a broad array of simulation types, from simple linear stess analysis to non-liner static stress, including injection molding simulation, thermal stress simulation and modal frequency simulation.
Due to limited amount of teacher/student interaction (only 10 lectures), the CAE software had to be easy to learn and provide quick results.
Using the CAE software in an academic enviroment, preference was given to low-cost or even free solutions.
Autodesk Solution Provider Norcam provided the teacher with training manuals and helped the teacher to access and distribute Autodesk Fusion 360 licenses to the students.
By following these manuals developed by Norcam, the teacher was able to lecture this new course successfully in the first occurrence of this new course!
The students were submitted to an inquiry and the overall opinion was extremely favourable. Students felt that they learned how to improve product design by means of CAE.
The success of implementing Fusion 360 with Simulation Extension was mainly due to the high level support and proprietary documentaion developed by Norcam.
This enabled the teacher to feel confortable to introduce not only a new course, but a new CAD/CAM/CAE software.
For the department, having a partner that can provide support when things get stuck, was fundamental to have satisfied students.
By working closely with the university teacher and the department, Norcam was able to guide the definition of the course contents and give assurance that the course would be a success.
When teachers individually try to adopt a software in the classroom, more than often a considerable time is spent getting the software to work or to fix problems.
The most noteworthy outcome is that Autodesk Fusion 360 is nowadays the first CAD/CAM/CAE software platform that students and new engineers will consider for design and manufacturing.

Virtualizing Metrology Classes with Autodesk PowerINSPECT and VirtualCMM
The Mechanical Engineering Faculty of the University of Aveiro offers a course in metrology and they actually own one premium coordinate measuring machine (CMM). However, it is not possible to give a class of 20+ students individual access to this machine. Also, having untrained people learning to handle a CMM on a hands-on approach might risk expensive damage to the machine. The teacher approached us, asking how they could train students in Autodesk PowerINSPECT, without giving the students direct access to the machine, but still giving them the full metrology experience.
Avoiding human error with Autodesk PowerMILL: Wrong tool diameter detection
The Spanish Moldmaker located in Galicia had a not so uncommon problem with their tools: because tools are shared by different machines, sometimes a human error occurs and the wrong tool is inserted in the tool magazine. While it is pretty easy to confuse a 8mm ball nose tool with a 10mm ball nose tool, especially when working under pressure, the resulting damage is normally very difficult to correct. Often the whole part has to be scrapped. Matrigalsa approached us and asked if we could help them prevent these human errors.
