Success Story

5-axis CAM integration in manufacturing of designer furniture by Nezozen Kft.

5-axis CAM integration in manufacturing of designer furniture by Nezozen Kft.

Customer challenge

Nezozen Ltd. produces large, unique furniture, installations, and sceneries from special plastic materials using 5-axis milling. The NC programming was carried out using an older version of a CAM system. The efficiency of this CAM system has declined significantly over the years. Nezozen Ltd. wanted to improve productivity, programming reliability, and flexibility by introducing a new CAM system.

Project goals

The following tasks were identified for integration:
Provide customized CAM training on 3, 3+2, and 5-axis milling;
- Development of a post-processor for the 5-axis milling machine according to specific needs;
- Development of machine kinematics for the 5-axis milling machine based on the post-processor.

Solution

In the first phase of the integration we have organized a customized training session at the customer's site. The training topics were elaborated to enable them to create multi-axis milling operations for their daily work with Fusion 360 in a proper and efficient way.
We have integrated unique functional solutions during the development of the post-processor of the 5-axis milling machine, taking into account the properties of the milling machine’s controller. These solutions allowed running 3+2 and continuous 5-axis NC programs safely, and without crashes.
In order to create collision-free and safe NC programs, it was also necessary to create a kinematic model of the customer’s 5-axis milling machine. This was developed in accordance with the post-processor to ensure, that the simulation of milling operations made by the Fusion 360 user interface was genuinely safe.

Business outcome

Implementing the new CAM system has lived up to expectations: the time required to create 3+2 & 5-axis toolpaths with Fusion 360 has been significantly reduced for the CAM programming of the most common products. Collision checking and safe post-processing of the created NC programs have significantly improved the efficiency of the daily work. This leads directly to an increase in the company's profit.

Conclusion

The ability to create safe and efficient 5-axis toolpaths for the production of customer's products has been realized with the implementation of the Fusion 360 CADCAM system. Tailored training, customized postprocessor, and created machine kinematics provided good support to meet the requirements of the new CAM system.
