The Power of BIM through Autodesk Revit & Robot Structural Analysis

The Power of BIM through Autodesk Revit & Robot Structural Analysis

Customer challenge

Proposed Residential apartments in Gachie, Kiambu County housing comprises of 3 blocks of units with 8 levels and basement provision. Dispersed teams on different systems in place for design was the real challenge on the ground.

Collaboration and coordination for all the teams involved was also a challenge. Several members of the team were not skilled in Autodesk technologies prior to the project and that there was no neutral solution to undertake the project.

Additionally, there was a concept of affordability from the inception stage, this called for a software solution that would enable changes to be made instantly on the designs and shared with the rest of the team.

Project goals

  • The Government of Kenya has encouraged investors to develop more housing units with at least 200,000 units designed and built annually in order to curb the housing shortage in Kenya major urban areas. Edvik Consulting Civil & Structural Engineers was founded with a vision to be the premier provider of quality, cost effective and client-centric structural and civil engineering services, and related contract advisory services in the built environment.
  • The mission of the company is to serve clients with a discerning eye for quality and value for money, and to work with partners who share and appreciate their value of integrity, professionalism, and excellence. Edvik Consulting believes in delivering to their commitments no matter the cost.
  • The proposed residential apartments in Gachie, Kiambu county is one of such projects that they have endeavored to showcase their force in the AEC Industry. To achieve that, technology especially in the usage of BIM Softwares is their key priority, particularly in the usage of Autodesk Revit Software was proposed by Autodesk Solution Provider ADCC International E.A Ltd.

Solution

How EDVIK Consulting solved it with Autodesk solution

Overcoming the Primordial Slime:

Consulting engineers in Kenya mostly use basic AutoCAD software in their designs which is basically 2D Oriented. The main reason for this is that the education system in Kenya is shaped in such a way that most engineering students are trained only in the usage of 2D Basic AutoCAD Software right from the University. As they start working within the industry they carry on with the same culture and develop themselves out of their own initiative to employ more sophisticated design and drawings tools.

However, Edvik Consulting decided to take a different approach, to them a BIM Workflow approach for Civil & Structural design is the best workflow that they chose to use in the design of the Proposed residential apartments in Gachie.

More productivity & Quick Return of Investments:

Edvik Consulting aims to be the best in the industry in project delivery and with this approach they have already started enjoying the benefits.

1. Time is now being saved in repetitive works in the designs and spent more in problem solving.

2. Analysis on structural designs is now much faster with the use of Robot Structural Analysis.

3. Edvik Consulting can now handle multiple projects concurrently since the tools needed for automation are available at their disposal.

4. Collaboration with Architects has now been made easier with the use of a central Revit Model

5. Automated revision of drawings has made designing a fun activity

6. Edvik consulting is able to pass on the benefits of optimized, safe, and cost-effective engineering designs to their clients resulting in better returns on investments on projects for the client.

Business outcome

The design was challenging using conventional 2D analysis and design using spreadsheets, especially for seismic (earthquake) loads.

Robot Structural Analysis was very useful and fast in the 3D analysis and design for all critical loads, including seismic loads to Eurocodes design standards. The Finite Element Modelling (FEM) feature in Robot structural analysis helped us to optimize the member sizes, providing a cost saving for the client.

Conclusion

Developing the model and drawings in Revit wasquite fast. The drawings produced were of a very high quality.

Kipevu Road, Mombasa Expansion(Design Build)

Initially, the existing four lane dual carriageway suffered increased traffic leading to bottling at the Changamwe roundabout thus effectively disrupting fluidity of cargo movement. Building the new road on the existing two lane road means the trades have to be carefully aligned in order to properly coordinate physical movements and the storage of equipment and materials. Designers working on the project have to contend with existing gas and water pipes, roads, tracks, and other utilities since the project involved the relocation of these services. In addition, the expansion area of at least 1.2 km long and contained numerous intersections with roads, canals, and bicycle paths; existing structures such as catenary portals make surveying the project area another challenge.
