Kipevu Road, Mombasa Expansion(Design Build)

Initially, the existing four lane dual carriageway suffered increased traffic leading to bottling at the Changamwe roundabout thus effectively disrupting fluidity of cargo movement. Building the new road on the existing two lane road means the trades have to be carefully aligned in order to properly coordinate physical movements and the storage of equipment and materials. Designers working on the project have to contend with existing gas and water pipes, roads, tracks, and other utilities since the project involved the relocation of these services. In addition, the expansion area of at least 1.2 km long and contained numerous intersections with roads, canals, and bicycle paths; existing structures such as catenary portals make surveying the project area another challenge.

"Superimposing the new design with all the existing data and surface, was a challenge”, one of design team member expressed. Bridge Works involved construction of a 2 Span Rail Over Bridge with reinforced concrete and piling works.

Throughout the design, GIBB Africa Ltd relied on BIM processes and intelligent 3D models leveraging Autodesk Civil 3D. The 3D models were used in coordination, collaboration, and construction planning. The earthworks, road, and utilities infrastructure were modelled using Autodesk Civil 3D® ensuring delivery of higher quality design alternatives faster by evaluating more what if scenarios earlier in the design process and hence able to make design changes more quickly with design and documentation that is dynamically linked. Our Technical Support in software and training further enabled GIBB save time and material by using more coordinated, consistent data to more quickly compute earthwork volumes, perform quantity take offs, and deliver high quality models to contractors for accurate set out and construction planning.

BIM software and digital 3D models from Autodesk Civil 3D have helped GIBB improve its design for the complex capacity enhancement and construction of Kipevu road project producing a more accurate project bid. During the construction process these same models were used to produce accurate construction drawings as well as enabling all the project stakeholders to understand the project more fully, collaborate more efficiently, make better technical choices, control risks, and deliver the project more cost effectively Mombasa port has lately witnessed major improvement through multi billion infrastructural and technology investment
