Talon Utilizes Digital Transformation to Bring Agility to the Mining Industry

Customer challenge

To break into the GET market and stay ahead, product designs need to be simple effective and efficient. But the Mining Industry is dangerous, and safety is paramount. The use of hammers and tools used to fit and remove existing GET products can lead to injury. Talon needed to build an effective team who are capable to design world leading products. The twist is prior to starting work with Talon, all of the Engineers had never been to a mine site and had never heard of GET!

Project goals

Talon’s goal is to provide the global mining industry with safe, efficient, and effective engineering solutions through R&D, innovative product design and best quality castings. To achieve this, Talon built an agile team of Engineers utilizing simple and effective Autodesk technologies such as 3D CAD design, data management, and digital simulation as a bed rock. Additionally, the capabilities of physical rapid prototyping and 3D scanning was embraced.

Solution

The wide range of programs, features, and functions provided by the Autodesk Product Design & Manufacturing Collection and the competitive subscription license model was very compelling for Talon. Inventor is clean and simple to use to create complex geometry. Vault Professional enabled a controlled and efficient data management system combined with effective design tools. Inventor Nastran improved Talon's overall design and reduced the risk of catastrophic product failure before casting.

Business outcome

From 2012 Talon has grown from one Engineer, Mr. Neil Dennis himself, to a team of 6 with plans to continue expanding in 2021. Talon now has 5 registered patents and retailing products in Australia, USA, Mexico and Africa. Talon’s clear vision and determination from their Engineering Director, Mr. Dennis proves that with the right technology and people’s innovation, they can achieve their goal. Digital transformation enabled alternative options and outcomes that previously were not possible.

Conclusion

With great technology comes great agility. Many know that the mining industry is one of the most high risk and competitive industries. Through the digital transformation process, Talon is leveraging Autodesk’s technology, 3D Printing, 3D Scanning, their innovation and experience. Talon have met the challenges and built an agile team, achieving their goal of creating safe and cost effective GET. Moving away from the traditional business model, Talon have pushed the boundaries of technology.

Additive Manufacturing Takes Conformal Cooling To New Heights

STS has for over 45 years specialized in fabrication moulds for Plastic Injection and Blow Moulds. Their primary customers are from the Automotive Industries. 6 years back, STS adopted the Autodesk Moldflow solution with the vision to improve and optimize on their mould design capabilities. Recent years, many Automotive parts have evolved to be more complex and challenging for their mould fabrication workflow. STS wanted to explore the possibilities to embrace additive manufacturing using 3D Metal Printing Technology to build a complex cooling channel with the objective to reduce cycle time and prolong the tooling's life spend. However, Conformal Cooling is very new to their designers and they needed a verification tool that is capable of helping them to verify the conformal cooling channel that they have designed are effectively extracting heat from the mould.

Reduce Material Wastes and Increase Project Communication with other Project Partners

Kimlun Group provides one-stop solutions from engineering to construction in the building industry. They found that their tender team was spending significant time on calculating bill of materials (BOM) when preparing proposals. Materials planning on the site was not accurate and on time for delivery. Material waste was also a key area that they wanted to solve to save on project costs. Finally, spending lots of meeting time with architecture and C&S partners was also a big challenge for them to deliver projects on time.

Improve Efficiency of Internal Collaboration Between Different Departments and Different Countries

As a global company, Haarslev Industries Sdn Bhd needs to collaborate with teams from different departments and different countries. They found that using email to transfer files is slow and increases workloads. Engineers on the client site sometimes will get non-updated drawing versions to present. This causes oversight on non-updated data.
