Renovation Project for The National Library of Estonia

Renovation Project for The National Library of Estonia

Customer challenge

Renovating the National Library was exciting; however, a highly challenging project. “The library was designed like a fortress – keep the books in, keep people out. We need to open it up, bring people in, make it a welcoming place for the community,” explained Anni Veske, Chief Architect and BIM Specialist at Sirkel & Mall. And the architects need to achieve this while keeping key elements of the building intact, due to its cultural heritage status. It was estimated, that using Autodesk Revit for architecture, interior architecture, and for most of the MEP parts of the design was crucial to avoid mistakes and speed up the work with the building model. The Autodesk BIM 360 platform enabled the workflow when several architects worked simultaneously within the same model and was not dependent on the location of the office. This was extremely useful during the COVID-19 lockdown, when teams had to work from remote home offices.

Project goals

The primary business objective was to not exceed budget: get the project done with a limited number of work hours and finish the job for the given deadline. That’s why choosing the right software solution and enabling a smooth workflow was extremely important.

Solution

For such an important and challenging project, Sirkel & Mall needed to set the team up for success. With the help of the AruCAD Süsteemid sales team, they signed up for Autodesk BIM 360 Design. “It’s the most reliable solution, we saw it’s been working for our structural engineers really well,” explained the chief designer. “We wanted to have an Autodesk product that’s made for this specific reason. It’s much better integrated with Revit. It’s very reliable, you know that it works.” AruCAD Süsteemid also has supported the Sirkel & Mall designers team to workout the needed Revit templates and Dynamo scripts, according to local Estonian BIM regulations and IFC export parameters.

Business outcome

Designers worked more efficiently thanks to Autodesk BIM 360 Design (Collaboration Pro). The renovation design phase had an ambitious timeline. Despite this, and the additional challenges posed by COVID-19, the team was on track to meet it. “We estimate that if the team were not using Revit and BIM 360 Design, we would have needed the help of three additional architects for two months to meet the timeline,” sayd Simo Sirk, project manager at Sirkel & Mall. “This translates into cost savings of about 20,000 Euro.”

Conclusion

Usage of the modern Autodesk BIM software enabled the team to avoid mistakes and improve the quality of the design. With Revit and BIM 360 Design in the combined workflow, the model was now easy to navigate, check and understand even for customers and end-users who might not be so experienced in reading technical drawings. Filling customer's requirements about BIM data gives opportunity for precise price estimation for the construction process and saves time and money. The Estonian National Library is one of the best examples of architecture and the freshest object of national heritage in Estonia. Our work is to ensure that the building will be useful and remarkable for several generations, and Revit with BIM 360 Design helped us to achieve these goals.

Akso-Haus Ltd Private Residence Building

Towards the end of the year 2021, we had to carry out interior and exterior design project with our partner and client Akso-Haus Ltd (https://www.aksohaus.ee/en/), prefabricated modular houses producer since 2004. The challenge was to support them operatively to bring the final phase of a client’s great idea and vision to life. In this case, the project was quite challenging due to tight project and limited budget size. To insure technical quality, by having same time to keep working efficiency and time schedules, Revismo was opting for Autodesk 3ds Max.

Peat Pallet Line Automation with Autodesk Inventor

Latma SIA helps small and medium-sized companies to implement automated systems and industrial robots in production. The challenge for this project - palletizing different peat substrate packages in both 250L and 300L. The peat is a material which, after pressing, can either remain constant or increase, depending on the weather and the raw materials. Also, the weight of the package reaches 70 kg, but the lifting capacity of the robot has been determined, so a tool (gripper) must be made for moving the peat package and empty pallets, strong enough and long-lasting, but light. There are also two roller conveyors in the line, with one help you can turn the pack around its axis (180 degrees) and plaster it on the other conveyor to 90 degrees. Because the packages must be folded with the specified end to one side.
