Process Automation at Colas Hungary

Process Automation at Colas Hungary

Customer challenge

An essential part of quality assurance for road construction is continuous sampling of the different layers (soils and road structure). The quality assurance engineers lay out the locations of the sampling points along the road. Then the site engineers coordinate the sampling based on layout plans. The results and samples are sent back to the lab for evaluation. Once the detailed analysis is done, the data is sent back to the site. This is a time consuming manual process with room for errors.

Project goals

The primary goal was to save time and avoid data losses so Colas Hungary can achieve better quality and reduce time spent on manual tasks. There was a need to digitize the process, evaluate what can be automated and how manual work can be minimized. While one complete sampling and evaluation process can take several days with the traditional methods, the customer needed to be able to do it within a day.

Solution

Autodesk Solution Provider HungaroCAD Ltd. deployed Autodesk Civil 3D to lay out the sampling points based on different algorithms. We developed a custom add-on for Civil 3D that creates sampling point locations based on layer volumes or road lengths. The 3D corridor model and layout plans are uploaded to Autodesk BIM 360 Docs. A custom Autodesk Forge application creates BIM 360 issues from the sampling points created in Civil 3D automatically. The site engineer can simply fill out the special attributes in a BIM 360 app on a mobile device.

Business outcome

The engineers on the site are happy to get rid of paperwork and be able to manage all the steps on their mobile devices. They save time and don’t need to worry about sending data on paper or in an email manually. The lab staff are able to automate sampling point layout and they don’t have to send it to the site engineers manually. They see the different tests getting done in real-time and are able to extract the results in an Excel format, instead of inputting it manually to the lab software.

Conclusion

By leveraging the use of different software tools in the Autodesk portfolio and combining it with HungaroCAD’s skills and expertise in optimizing workflows and developing custom applications, Colas Hungary was able to achieve productivity growth with streamlined processes and better transparency. This aligns with the company’s digital strategy to utilize modern technology in order to reach sustainability and quality goals.

Zip Tech Project with HungaroCAD

In the recent years, it is clear that customer needs have changed. There is an increasing need to customize products. The size and shape of the space available can also be a challenge. Another difficulty is to make changes to the model during the design process, which may be due to new information, a changed need, or simply a design decision. Tracking and adapting these changes is a challenge to designers on a daily basis.
