Customer challenge

OSCO has a requirement for "As Built" documentation for one of their projects in Oman. Client has informed OSCO to capture the As Built condition of the building and its structure without using typical manual methods. OSCO did not have expertise to do As Built documentation using other technology and they have assigned IMTAC to support them in achieving this target.

Project goals

The As Built documentation/Scan to BIM project for OSCO was the pioneer project in OMAN where 3D laser scanning technology was used for taking the As Built measurement. The project involves successfully capturing the As Built measurement and provide the As Built model in 3D and 2D to the client.

Solution

IMTAC has used LIDAR scanning technology and successfully scanned the entire building for creating the As Built drawings. The point cloud data obtained from the scanner is processed using Autodesk Recap software and the 3D model was created in Revit. IMTAC has provided training and support to OSCO engineers in processing the point cloud data as well as for 3D modelling and rendering of the projects.

Business outcome

OSCO was able to submit the accurate As Built documentation/drawings of the entire building to the client. Client has approved the drawings and appreciated OSCO engineers for the data quality and standard. IMTAC has been successful in uplifting OSCO engineers to work on Autodesk Recap and Revit software for processing point cloud data and 3D modelling. This helped OSCO to obtain multiple projects related to the same requirements from various ministries.

Conclusion

The Scan to BIM project for OSCO was the first project in OMAN using LIDAR technology and developing 3D models using Autodesk software. After understanding the benefits of this technology, various government and non-government organisations in OMAN have started to make it mandatory to take As Built documentation using LIDAR technology. This helped in improving the Autodesk solutions across all the clients in the market.
