Opening Doors | BIM Delivers Results for Industrial High-Speed Door Manufacturer

Opening Doors | BIM Delivers Results for Industrial High-Speed Door Manufacturer

Customer challenge

When Union approached Quadra, they were keen to take their existing Autodesk Inventor models and use them to create fully-rendered Revit Families; built to complement their existing manufacturing processes. This need was further driven by a customer request for BIM-ready models for a large and potentially lucrative contract. Union had been developing doors in Inventor for many years; however, when it became clear that they needed to implement BIM into their designs they turned to Quadra.

Project goals

Union needed to create BIM-ready models of their designs, in order to win a large and lucrative contract. Quadra worked in partnership with Union to create some of the Revit Families, helping them to secure the contract. By creating BIM-ready models of their doors, Unions' aim was to upload their models to their website so that clients and architects would be able to download these drawings and specify the doors early on in their building projects. This is a crucial element for Union, especially when tendering for jobs especially relating to new-builds.

Solution

Quadra worked in partnership with Union to create some of the Revit Families. This helped secure the contract and resulted in future business contracts being won. Once the Revit Families were successfully completed, Quadra then delivered Revit Essentials Training, allowing Craig and his team to make amendments to the existing models and for new families to be created by the in-house design team.

Business outcome

After the creation of the Revit Families by Quadra, Union not only secured the contract but then went on to fit over 100 doors in total on that and other sites. Since then, they have won multiple other contracts due to repeat business and securing other new business. They have also been highlighted as an example of an industry best practice. Craig Pace CAD Engineer says, “We wouldn’t have won that initial contract if we didn’t have BIM models and the processes in place ready to deliver the project effectively and we wouldn’t have BIM models and processes.”

Conclusion

BIM has opened up numerous opportunities for Union, with customers realising the potential of what Union can achieve now that they are able to provide BIM-compliant models. Unions’ next step is to look at collaboration within Revit and gain further BIM accreditations to ensure that they stay at the forefront of developments in this very competitive industry. By using Autodesk tools to their fullest extent and taking advantage of the wealth of knowledge and experience of the Quadra Solutions Technical Team, Union Industries are winning business, gaining repeat business, and driving efficiencies and collaborative working practices throughout their business.

Moving Forward with BIM

Ameon approached Autodesk Solution Provider Quadra a year ago when they attended a BIM Information Event hosted by Quadra. The organisation was keen to find out how they could bid on Government-funded BIM projects and improve efficiencies in the process. The small-medium sized organisation highlighted this as an area for development and something they needed to get involved with in order to stay competitive within the industry. This was deemed a priority despite the downturn in the economy and the construction industry as a whole.

Leading the Way | Continuous Improvement for Indusvent

Indusvent has a history of over 50 years in the dust extraction business and has been drawing in 2D AutoCAD® for around 25 of those years. While delighted with the ease of use and reliability of the AutoCAD software, Indusvent wanted to move away from drawing pieces of ducting and equipment line by line, as well as having to complete multiple iterations of elevations. Indusvent wanted a software solution that was 3D-based and would deliver a rapid return on investment (RoI).
