Success Story

Hurni Engineering, member of Hexagroup, was asked by Mikron to find a new PDM (Product Data Management) system compatible with their current ecosystem, implement it and support it in the transition. Mikron had to change its PDM system (SmarTeam V5R20) because it was no longer supported by its publisher, which had abandoned it in favor of a new technological solution. The integration of this with Autodesk's CAD system, used by Mikron, was problematic and would have required too complex customization for all systems to be compatible.
The desire was to choose a PDM system from the same publisher as Autodesk's CAD system, or a PDM system close to the SAP ERP. This is to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past by building a complex architecture that would have greatly complicated updates.
From a technical point of view, the goal was to have a united ecosystem and avoid unnecessary customizations. From a business perspective, the goal was to create a single source of information that different departments and sites could rely on to collaborate. As a result, the cross-functional teams could work together on the same structure to save time and efficiency, while monitoring the life cycle and design review indices.
For the market research carried out by Mikron Boudry, 3 solutions were selected and tested according to the following criteria:
• Integration with Autodesk AutoCAD Mechanical
• Integration with Autodesk Inventor
• Integration with Autodesk Factory Design Utilities (3D Layout)
• Autodesk Multi CAD integration
• Integration with the different ERP (SAP & Proman)
• System flexibility
• Number of databases, servers (PDM-ERP)
• Deployment
• Costs
The business objective has been achieved. Mikron is now able to manage the lifecycle of its designs, manage the sharing of these in the company via the web client, collaborate across different sites around the world on a common database.
Here are the technical objectives achieved:
• Autodesk Vault parts and Bills of materials enable centralized management before transfer to one of the ERP systems in use.
• Integration with the existing electronic documentation generation system (3D user manual) for customers.
• Pre-configure a BOM structure and files for a new assembly line before the design starts.
• Development of an interface between Autodesk Vault Professional and SAP to control the items and bills of materials to be transmitted to the ERP and to push this information directly into the ERP system without manual operations.
Finding the right skills and ensuring optimal collaboration between the various stakeholders were undoubtedly the key points of this major project. Now, the foundation for continuous improvement is now in place in order to achieve future goals. "Let's build together your projects of tomorrow."
The project in a few figures:
Hurni Engineering, member of Hexagroup, provided us with different skills in technical specification, configuration and implementation, methodology, input work, development, training and support. One of the keys to the success of such an implementation is to ensure that we are a team between the integrator and the client throughout the project. The common language is also an important aspect to facilitate exchanges and understanding with not only the IT team but also the users. It seemed obvious to us to collaborate with Hurni Engineering, which has been our trusted partner for more than 20 years.
To conclude, we can confirm that we are very satisfied with our current CAD-PDM environment through our division. The tools are powerful and stable.

From CAD to BIM in 35 hours
Kämpfer Erwin Architekturbüro is a small to medium sized architecture firm located near Bern, Switzerland. In the past, the company was mostly focused on traditional 2D CAD workflows and project delivery. The latest project, a 4 story apartment building, had been created as a collection of 2D CAD drawings. However, the client needed a better way to visualize his design intent and a more efficient way to collaborate with other design teams. The biggest challenge on this project was the short time frame for project delivery. In order to meet all requirements with regards to quality, time and cost Autodesk Solution Provider Hexagroup SA suggested a transition to a BIM based workflow with Autodesk Revit.
