Success Story

From CAD to BIM in 35 hours

From CAD to BIM in 35 hours

Customer challenge

Kämpfer Erwin Architekturbüro is a small to medium sized architecture firm located near Bern, Switzerland. In the past, the company was mostly focused on traditional 2D CAD workflows and project delivery. The latest project, a 4 story apartment building, had been created as a collection of 2D CAD drawings. However, the client needed a better way to visualize his design intent and a more efficient way to collaborate with other design teams. The biggest challenge on this project was the short time frame for project delivery. In order to meet all requirements with regards to quality, time and cost Autodesk Solution Provider Hexagroup SA suggested a transition to a BIM based workflow with Autodesk Revit.

Project goals

The main goal for reaching customer success was a fully integrated BIM model of the multi-story apartment building based on the existing 2D CAD drawings. This target had to be reached within 40 workhours in order to meet constraints on time and cost. The agreed upon deliverable was a 3D model featuring all aspects of the architectural design including 3D views, renderings showing design intent, floorplans including appliances and intelligent room tags as well as an overview of the surrounding buildings and the terrain.

Solution

Hexagroup were able to convince the customer of the massive benefit of using the Autodesk Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection with its interoperable software solutions leading to faster results and better overall project quality. The following steps were implemented to reach customer success: 1. Rapid onboarding of the client using an AEC Collection subscription 2. Preparation of the existing 2D drawings with AutoCAD 3. Preparation of the surrounding terrain with InfraWorks and Civil 3D 4. Using the interoperable workflow between AutoCAD and Revit to rapidly transform the 2D drawings into a fully featured BIM Model 5. Using coordination between Civil 3D and Revit to link the terrain and structure based on shared reference points

Business outcome

The extensive and competent support by Hexagroup subsidiary Walder + Trüeb Engineering AG led to project completion within less than 35 workhours including project meetings, full BIM model creation from 2D base drawings and project hand-off. Going forward, the customer can now use his new 3D Revit model to improve collaboration with other design teams and better communicate his design intent with all stakeholders. His access to the Autodesk Construction Cloud via Autodesk Docs allows for better project collaboration and sets the baseline for an improved cloud-based workflow.

Conclusion

The highly effective and approachable support team at Hexagroup subsidiary Walder + Trüeb Engineering AG was able to transform Erwin Kämpfer Architekturbüro from a traditional 2D design company to a highly competitive and BIM ready company within less than a week time.
