MFE Make the Impossible Simple with 3D Technology

MFE Make the Impossible Simple with 3D Technology

Customer challenge

MFE's engineers used to work with a number of different drawing and design tools on a single project. This was prone to errors, miscommunication and makes coordination work difficult. Their projects were delayed and they lost resources and revenue. Their design was unable to provide clients with detailed visualization of their products and solutions. While at the same time, materials were not optimized to their expectation.

Project goals

MFE required the following goals: 1) High quality rendered 3D models to be showcased to customers with fast expected approvals 2) Centralized design tools that improve outcomes with the ability to investigate multiple scenarios 3) Data-driven assurance so that projects can be delivered on schedule and within budget 4) Reduced errors, maximized resources, improved communications and coordination 5) Upskilling their design team to utilize software in the AEC Collection to win new businesses

Solution

1) AEC Collection: With BIM, MFE can accurately get the BOM in a project which helps to improve the communication and coordination within their team. 2) Autodesk Dynamo: Leveraging Dynamo in Revit enables MFE to generate a proper graph, automation, and data management to allow project teams to isolate tasks, facilitate collaboration, and enhance communication to optimize project delivery. At the same time, this cuts down the material wastage through material optimization.

Business outcome

MFE has increased the speed of construction with a 4-5 day per floor construction cycle average. Informative 3D models now allow engineers to manage changes in member size and properties to visualize overall 3D structure. Since the Autodesk solution takes care of the analysis portion, MFE only focuses on managing change as required. MFE achieved between 20% to 30% time savings with Revit’s integrated single model. Materials wastage too was reduced 20% to 30% through the implementation.

Conclusion

After adopting BIM through Autodesk, MFE achieved faster delivery while supported by high-quality, 3D contextual models with enablement of virtual risk scenario mitigation. Currently, the adoption of 3D modelling is around 70% in MFE. MFE's goal is to achieve 85% of 3D model adoption by 2021. Together, AD&M and MFE will continue to develop new workflows that are more connected, efficient, and engaging for MFE’s clients.

Additive Manufacturing Takes Conformal Cooling To New Heights

STS has for over 45 years specialized in fabrication moulds for Plastic Injection and Blow Moulds. Their primary customers are from the Automotive Industries. 6 years back, STS adopted the Autodesk Moldflow solution with the vision to improve and optimize on their mould design capabilities. Recent years, many Automotive parts have evolved to be more complex and challenging for their mould fabrication workflow. STS wanted to explore the possibilities to embrace additive manufacturing using 3D Metal Printing Technology to build a complex cooling channel with the objective to reduce cycle time and prolong the tooling's life spend. However, Conformal Cooling is very new to their designers and they needed a verification tool that is capable of helping them to verify the conformal cooling channel that they have designed are effectively extracting heat from the mould.

Reduce Material Wastes and Increase Project Communication with other Project Partners

Kimlun Group provides one-stop solutions from engineering to construction in the building industry. They found that their tender team was spending significant time on calculating bill of materials (BOM) when preparing proposals. Materials planning on the site was not accurate and on time for delivery. Material waste was also a key area that they wanted to solve to save on project costs. Finally, spending lots of meeting time with architecture and C&S partners was also a big challenge for them to deliver projects on time.

Improve Efficiency of Internal Collaboration Between Different Departments and Different Countries

As a global company, Haarslev Industries Sdn Bhd needs to collaborate with teams from different departments and different countries. They found that using email to transfer files is slow and increases workloads. Engineers on the client site sometimes will get non-updated drawing versions to present. This causes oversight on non-updated data.
