McMillen Jacobs Associates - Collaborating More Efficiently in Civil 3D

McMillen Jacobs Associates - Collaborating More Efficiently in Civil 3D

Customer challenge

Jacobs Associates was founded in 1954 to provide practical, cost-effective, and innovative construction engineering. J. Donovan Jacobs believed in the importance of engineers “getting their boots dirty” in order to understand the construction process. McMillen was founded by Mort McMillen and Mara McMillen in 2004. They started the business to provide technical services to the natural and water resources industry with a focus of keeping the client’s needs at the forefront of every project.

Collaborating with Autodesk Civil 3D, across many offices and companies. They have extended project teams, including consultants around the US, and internationally that all needed to participate in the design effort in one environment. MJA knew there were options out there, and at one point utilized Autodesk Vault, but ultimately decided to give Collaboration for Autodesk Civil 3D a shot.

Project goals

Finding and implementing a solution that would handle extended collaboration on Autodesk Civil 3D workflows, including data shortcuts, sheet set manager, xrefs, etc

Solution

ProSoft was able to partner with MJA in many ways, including but not limited to:

  • Training and support on their Design products, Autodesk Civil 3D, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Revit, etc.
  • Sales / Post-Sales Support
  • Vault Implementation, training, and support.
  • Autodesk Construction cloud implementation, training, and support.
  • Ongoing Vault server administration and maintenance.

Business outcome

The initial implementation, training, and support of Vault into their environment was a process over a couple of months.

As technologies evolved, and Autodesk Revit was added to their portfolio, we implemented Autodesk BIM360, and the Autodesk Construction cloud to complement the Vault environment. We have remained the primary server administrator for their vault servers and provided ongoing maintenance and support.

Conclusion

As the project teams grew, and new design software’s were added their existing Vault implementation had to be grown to include multiple Vault servers, and eventually the Autodesk Construction Cloud was added to support Autodesk Revit workflows.

As the Autodesk Civil 3D collaboration tools evolve, teams are beginning to move from Vault to Autodesk ACC for their civil infrastructure projects as well.

Changeover to a Single Software Platform

During the Business Process Assessment (BPA), we found that Hunt Electric had been struggling with multiple platforms to get their jobs completed. With many hours lost from rework and lost data going from multiple platforms to the other, they were looking for a solution to bring everyone on the design side to one design software platform.

BIM 360 Design for At Home Use During Covid-19 Pandemic

As things changed in our environments with Covid-19, Elliott Workgroup had a need to work from home. After a few weeks of remote access not working great, they remembered that we had discussions of the BIM 360 Platform in the past. Although they did not take advantage of it at the time, now would be the perfect time for them. Steven Bruemmer, Principal AIA at Elliott Workgroup, stated that he wished they had done it sooner.

CEMCON, Ltd. - Success in Moving Forward

CEMCON, Ltd., incorporated in 1972, is a civil engineering consulting firm specializing in the planning, civil design, surveying, permitting and construction of private and public infrastructure and transportation systems. Our business model and focus on client service affords an efficient and integrated team approach that creates value at each project phase and has earned us the trust and confidence of developers, governmental agencies, and design/build clients. The big problem CEMCON faced was using legacy software and the learning curve that users would have to go through in order to upgrade to Autodesk Civil 3D. Rollout timing had to be multi-phase to ensure that production on projects continued to get out the door at the pace their customers come to expect. A well thought out implementation/training plan was created and ultimately allowed CEMCON to succeed in this transition.
