Improving Design Workflow To Increase Operational Efficiency

Improving Design Workflow To Increase Operational Efficiency

Customer challenge

Dexion is well known in delivering state-of-the-art Industrial Storage and Materials Handling Solutions for warehouse and distribution environments, while their Commercial Solutions team offer specialist expertise and innovative products to help their customers achieve their goals.

Through the years, Dexion invented a custom build design to cater for different customer's needs. Many of their component designs and racking are located in Autodesk AutoCAD.

Their project becomes very "heavy" when it reaches a huge assembly environment, and it is very time consuming to generate Bill of Material (BOM) when it sometimes requires manual calculation.

Project goals

The priority of this project was to develop an intelligent yet efficient workflow through 3D Modelling Technology to help automate certain processes whilst not jeopardising existing Autodesk AutoCAD data.

BOM needed to be generated in the shortest time possible for their operation team in order to help the sales team provide quotes to their clients, followed by animating their 3D design from parts to assembled models, so customers have a clear picture on what is going to be delivered.

Solution

Our team at AD&M Global Sdn Bhd conducted a detailed discovery session together with the sales and engineering team of Dexion Asia to understand their requirements. Based on our study, we proposed to Dexion's Engineering team to undergo our customized training. The training covers:

1. Modeling Sheet Metal using Autodesk Inventor referencing their existing AutoCAD drawings

2. Building a Model Library with automated tools in Inventor

3. Assembly Modelling with Weldment environment

4. Design Project Workflow - stacking & pattern method

5. Working with BOM

Business outcome

The new workflow enables Dexion Asia to deliver their project faster and more effective. It helps to streamline the process and to uncover issues in early stage of design while reducing manufacturing costs too.

Conclusion

There are many functions in Autodesk Inventor software, a correct workflow helps to improves productivity from multiple aspects specially a 3D digital prototype that combines manufacturing information. It does not only save time but is also an effective cost saving tool.

Additive Manufacturing Takes Conformal Cooling To New Heights

STS has for over 45 years specialized in fabrication moulds for Plastic Injection and Blow Moulds. Their primary customers are from the Automotive Industries. 6 years back, STS adopted the Autodesk Moldflow solution with the vision to improve and optimize on their mould design capabilities. Recent years, many Automotive parts have evolved to be more complex and challenging for their mould fabrication workflow. STS wanted to explore the possibilities to embrace additive manufacturing using 3D Metal Printing Technology to build a complex cooling channel with the objective to reduce cycle time and prolong the tooling's life spend. However, Conformal Cooling is very new to their designers and they needed a verification tool that is capable of helping them to verify the conformal cooling channel that they have designed are effectively extracting heat from the mould.

Reduce Material Wastes and Increase Project Communication with other Project Partners

Kimlun Group provides one-stop solutions from engineering to construction in the building industry. They found that their tender team was spending significant time on calculating bill of materials (BOM) when preparing proposals. Materials planning on the site was not accurate and on time for delivery. Material waste was also a key area that they wanted to solve to save on project costs. Finally, spending lots of meeting time with architecture and C&S partners was also a big challenge for them to deliver projects on time.

Improve Efficiency of Internal Collaboration Between Different Departments and Different Countries

As a global company, Haarslev Industries Sdn Bhd needs to collaborate with teams from different departments and different countries. They found that using email to transfer files is slow and increases workloads. Engineers on the client site sometimes will get non-updated drawing versions to present. This causes oversight on non-updated data.
