Great British Sports Cars Success with Autodesk CAM Solutions

Customer challenge

Great British Sports Cars was started in 2007 with the introduction of the Zero being their first car. This has developed and refined over the years, with more and more components being designed and manufactured in-house, with investment in CAD and CAM software and machinery. From the start of GBS doing their own in house CNC machining, they were using CAM software from one of Autodesk’s competitors. This initially worked for them but they eventually had many issues and this software didn’t support the manufacture of more complex parts. They knew it was time for a change. For Great British Sports Cars as a company, it was a tough decision to change CAM software and suppliers as they have hundreds of parts/programs already being used and the staff were trained and familiar with it (although a little frustrated at its lack of capabilities). Not only this, but GBSC had a busy schedule ahead but knew that a change was needed in order to push the business forward.

Project goals

GBS had three goals in mind: 1) Improve machine cycle times and efficiency 2) Have a more intuitive CAM software for their team 3) Improve surface finish and quality of parts

Solution

They spoke with a lot of providers and had demos, but after visiting the Autodesk UK Technology Centre in Birmingham and seeing the infrastructure and support behind FeatureCAM they were impressed, and ultimately decided to change over to this new CAM software. After meeting with the team at Autodesk Birmingham, they were then introduced to the Cadspec CAM team who were there to help them through the changeover with technical support and expert product training.

Business outcome

The GBSC team is still learning FeatureCAM but has already have been producing complex parts within days of having it! Their manufacturing team told us that the quality and surface finish on the parts is significantly better and the whole machining process feels smoother with fewer vibrations and more constant spindle loads.

Conclusion

The team at GBSC is looking to explore Fusion 360 more, with a particular focus on the generative design aspect. Their aim is to not only further lightweight the components on the cars that they already produce but expand their product range too. Richard Hall, Director at GBS commented: "This has been a good move for GBS and will increase both quality and profit as we embrace the technology that Autodesk FeatureCAM can offer."

PreFab Lab creates a new vision of design quality with Fusion 360

The challenge faced by our customer was rooted in the desire to implement a unified system that could seamlessly span from the initial design phase through to the manufacturing stage. Their primary goal was to establish an integrated and cohesive process that would enhance efficiency and productivity at every step of the production cycle. This unified system was not only expected to streamline the design-to-manufacturing transition but also play a critical role in optimising nesting processes, a key component of their manufacturing operations. By unifying these aspects, the customer aimed to simplify their workflow, reduce potential bottlenecks, and ultimately achieve a more seamless and cost-effective approach to product development and production. This reflected their commitment to staying at the forefront of industry standards and innovation, ensuring that their products met the highest quality and efficiency standards.

Johnson Controls UK&I Push Their Business Forward with Connected Workflows

The team at Johnson Controls UK&I faced a challenge within their organisation as they grappled with disconnected workflows that spanned across various inter-disciplinary teams. This disconnection hindered the efficient operation of their business processes, creating bottlenecks and inefficiencies that needed immediate attention. To address this issue, the team had to embark on a journey to unify not only their workflows but also their templates and drawing processes. This unification effort required a comprehensive reevaluation of their existing systems and the implementation of a cohesive strategy to streamline operations and promote seamless collaboration among teams. In doing so, Johnson Controls UK&I aimed to enhance their overall productivity, reduce errors, and ultimately achieve a higher level of synergy among their diverse workforce.
