Success Story

From Simple AutoCAD Models to Intelligent Multi-platform Models and Collaboration

From Simple AutoCAD Models to Intelligent Multi-platform Models and Collaboration

Customer challenge

Palobora Mining Company needed a best practise workflow that drove smarter, intelligent data-driven decisions and responses to urgent matters such as equipment breakdowns on site. There was also a need for streamlined collaboration between the various design disciplines on projects. Palabora Mining Company also realised the need for additional functionality and features that would drive improved overall productivity by reducing re-design, pushing out of accurate B.O.M data, as well as intelligent design and modelling for better output and reuse for future projects.

Project goals

- Introduce multiple design applications for different types of projects.

- Streamline modelling phase and reduce detailing time.
- Automatically compile B.O.M.
- Improve productivity.

Solution

Presenting detailed courseware and implementing the Autodesk Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collection in addition to the existing PDM solution, made designing multi-disciplinary projects and models significantly easier by using the correct application for the specific project. With software compatibility, this also made collaboration between models easier, reducing design time and errors, resulting in shorter turnaround times.

Business outcome

Many hours are saved on manual component designs by using a variety of applications. This means less errors and less stress on individuals. Quick component labelling and identification, fast B.O.M generation means fewer human errors. Easy fully detailed fabrication drawings from 3D multi-disciplinary models within manageable time frames.

Being one of the larger and older mining companies, Palabora Copper is now able to respond fast on urgent modifications after equipment breakdowns on our aged infrastructure. With the correct applications that we are now empowered with, our design workflow is more streamlined and better manageable, enabling us to tackle larger retrofit and expansion projects internally within the Drawing Office, with shorter timeframes and flexibility to make changes as the projects evolve.

Modena OneSolve presented comprehensive training sessions on selected design applications, in both the Product Design & Manufacturing (PDM) and Architecture, Engineering & Construction (AEC) Collections, to the Engineering Draughting team at Palabora Copper. With a variety of design applications in these packages, the Drafters are now able to choose the correct application depending on the project type and discipline. The different type Drafters at their different levels within the Drawing Office can share and collaborate on larger high detailed projects, joining individual experience and knowledge.

As an example, the Design Draughtsperson is now able to fully compile a design model, and then hand it over to the Detailer to prepare detailed working drawings, with minimal interaction but with full understanding of design approach and intent between the parties. This makes him/her more available to work on other design developments in the pipeline, making the job scheduling more smoother with very satisfied clients

Conclusion

One might be thinking that the only way of getting end results in an engineering design environment is through long hours, work stress, and painstaking work on manual model designs, until you see the full range of specialized design applications that Autodesk has available. The training effort and continuous support we received from Modena OneSolve has been worthwhile, and we expect the Drawing Office to continue improving its effectiveness and efficiency as we onboard more personnel and stakeholders on our new ways of work.

K/M2K Saves 2 Hours of Work per Design Review through Better Remote Teamwork with Autodesk BIM360

During the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020, K/M2K Architecture and Interior Design found themselves struggling to navigate remote working during a national lockdown. Traditional methods of file sharing were found inefficient and lacking for a team that needed to communicate a lot of information at a high frequency.

From 2D AutoCAD to Intelligent iLogic-driven 3D Inventor Designs

Palian was using 2D AutoCAD in a primarily 3D dominated field, struggling with collaboration between branches and the length of time it would take to make relatively small changes to designs. Getting drawings and quantities to the sales team for quotation purposes took longer than desired and a lot of manual user calculations and input was still needed, which increased the change of costly "human error" mistakes.

DRA Global takes on Project Delays with Innovative use of Technology

DRA Global had to overcome a delay of 25 days over deadline for their Sierra Leone Project, so they needed to find a way to get that time back to avoid running over with this project. The impact of this was on their future expansion projects within the same mine, in Sierra Leone, which would be double the size of the original project.
