Digital Models and Automated Construction: Container Terminal for the Montevideo Port

Digital Models and Automated Construction: Container Terminal for the Montevideo Port

Customer challenge

GRINOR got the opportunity to construct their first container terminal on the operating port of Montevideo, Uruguay, as part of a larger contract that also included a new access to the port and a 2-mile viaduct overpassing the terminal.

Project goals

One of the project scopes was to construct the new pavement layers for the west terminal on a reclaimed land previously used only for the storage of light vehicles. Despite the customer experience on the construction of urban streets and highways across the country, it had never faced the challenge of working in an operating port, with little to no time for mistakes, as space for storage is a premium. As the end customer required that during the construction of the new pavement layers the terminal had to still operate at a rate of 70% of capacity, the only available approach was to subdivide the 35-acre terminal into smaller zones, so each sub-zone had to be completely finished before the next one could start.

Solution

Autodesk Civil 3D and Vehicle Tracking solutions were delivered by Autodesk Solution Provider Geosys to meet the customer's business objectives. For this solution to be successful, the customer decided to work with automated machine guidance for the grader to reduce the construction time. For this to happen, accurate three-dimensional models of all construction sites were needed beforehand.

Business outcome

Three significant business outcomes resulted from the solution delivered: 1) Reduced construction time 2) High accuracy 3) Increased job safety

Conclusion

The interaction between Civil and Machine Control Guidance teams was incredible. With the conditions, an extensive planning had to be done, taking into account the dynamic of the port and the unique end customer requirements. The main philosophy for this task was that as soon as one of the sub zones was available and free of interferences, construction had to be completed in the minimum time possible in order to move to the next sub-zone. Only with the Autodesk portfolio of solutions was this possible.
