Building a Scalable IT Infrastructure to Meet Client Demand

Building a Scalable IT Infrastructure to Meet Client Demand

Customer challenge

Cooper Baillie Ltd is a residential, master planning and urban design company that operates across the South of England, United Kingdom, typically employed to facilitate medium and large-scale developments. Their core clients are a wide variety of developers and landowners with whom they work to achieve high quality, sustainable and deliverable developments in tandem with a range of other disciplines and stakeholders. One of the key challenges for them as their business grows was how to leverage Autodesk tools and internal and external (cloud) IT hardware to be able to scale their workflow at short notice and generate cost-effectiveness for their business.

Project goals

Cooper Baillie had these primary objectives: •Be “infrastructure ready” to scale at short notice, using existing kit, data centre and AWS Cloud, including storage. •Optimise their workflows using 3ds Max and AutoCAD to maximise productivity, reduce client delivery milestones and gain more capacity. •Have a solid back-bone infrastructure that provided cost benefits to the business and its clients. •Maximise rendering speeds to deliver projects earlier than agreed deadlines.

Solution

Following initial consultations, site audit and consultation to review their business needs, infrastructure and what they deemed a typical project (timescale, file size, back up, archiving), Autodesk Solution Provider Bluegfx were able to propose an enhancement to their existing firewall, switches, storage and security, delivering faster data management, access to data, latency reduction and overall project management advantages, whilst optimising their workflows of 3ds Max and AutoCAD and greatly improving their overall performance between office and remote workers. We proposed Netgear, Synology storage and a local data centre where we could host their existing kit and how to implement AWS cloud for render burst needs.

Business outcome

Having completed stage 1 of the update to their network, firewall, storage, switches and latency enhancements, they saw a huge increase in number of shots, plans and scale of projects that could be delivered. They worked with our technical team to optimise their workflows in 3ds Max and AutoCAD to improve their delivery times, reduce files sizes, faster asset movement across their network and bandwidth latency reduction. They gained competitive advantage and capacity within their existing team to take on more work. The next phases identified are hosting new hardware in our dedicated data centre and running a live production with AWS.

Conclusion

“From Cooper Baillie’s perspective we want an IT support company that we can have direct communication with, removing the layers of hierarchy and unnecessary jargon. When investing in the future you need to feel confident that the advice is for the right reasons - to understand our needs and help facilitate our goals and deliverables as a business. Bluegfx have done this, working collaboratively and enabling us to build the necessary infrastructure for the company to offer a better service to our own clients. This process is evolving over time, but we are already feeling the benefits delivered by Matt and his team." - Cooper Baillie

V1 Continues its International Growth using Autodesk Tools to Create Stunning Visualisations

Visualisation One Limited is a specialized architectural 3D visualisation, animation and multimedia design company, primarily using Autodesk 3ds Max as its core modelling software. Their ongoing challenge was how they could leverage more performance from their infrastructure to increase productivity and stay ahead of their competitors. Autodesk tools are a staple part of their production process, but they needed to improve performance, network speed, storage/backup and speed of project delivery. As projects are becoming more complex, their IT infrastructure was starting to creak. So, they needed to look at both their Autodesk tools deployment (are they using the functionality to deliver true performance), and ensure that their backbone of hardware to create this content was efficient, scalable and future proof.
