Bowen Engineering Chooses Autodesk Build After Rigorous Evaluation Process

Bowen Engineering Chooses Autodesk Build After Rigorous Evaluation Process

Customer challenge

For nearly a decade, Bowen’s onsite construction workers, including general contractors, subcontractors, and owners used Autodesk PlanGrid software, which digitized drawings and provided real-time access to project plans, issues, photos, forms, and more.

“While our team was happy with the functionality of Autodesk PlanGrid, our continued expansion led to the need for the efficiencies that a more comprehensive project management solution would provide,” said Jared Redelman, Corporate Controls Manager, Bowen. “To determine which solution was best for Bowen, we thoroughly evaluated the top four, testing them on real projects and talking in-depth with company representatives about our requirements and expectations.”

Project goals

One of the four construction management solutions evaluated was the Autodesk Build component of Autodesk Construction Cloud, which Autodesk PlanGrid evolved into after it was acquired by Autodesk in 2018. With Autodesk Build, critical project information is stored in a central location in the Cloud, making it fast and easy for construction professionals to quickly get their hands on current documentation, such as plans, files, issues, photos, forms, assets, RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, schedules, and much more.

Solution

After a detailed, systematic testing process, Bowen decided to move forward with Autodesk Build for two main reasons:

  1. Its robust functionalities aligned with their needs
  2. Autodesk was open to suggestions and feature requests

“At Bowen, we value partnerships more than products,” said Todd Swain, director of IT. “Unlike other firms we evaluated, Autodesk was not only receptive to our suggestions, but they also wanted our feedback. In fact, they had implemented some of our recommendations before we became a customer.”

Once Bowen selected Autodesk Build, they turned to IMAGINiT for implementation and support because of a successful relationship with the company through their long-term account manager.

The plan included working with IMAGINiT for:

  • Autodesk Build software configuration including custom form creation
  • Setting criteria for user security and permissions
  • Knowledge transfer so Bowen could implement the software with expert guidance and oversight.

Business outcome

“IMAGINiT has been tremendously helpful in our ability to smoothly roll out each Autodesk Build component to our teams of employees and craft/trade professionals,” said Todd. “We have bi-weekly calls with our IMAGINiT account manager, who brings in other IMAGINiT experts as needed to provide answers to questions that come up as we vet each module, write the Standard Operating Procedures, and create the communications. Their guidance has helped us decide on the order for installation as well as to get user buy-in with every change.”

So far, Bowen has implemented the Sheets, RFIs, Submittals, and Issues tools. The next step is the Cost Control component, which will centralize construction project costs on a single platform in the Cloud. “At that time, we will turn to IMAGINiT for help integrating Autodesk Build with our ERP system,” said Jared.

Conclusion

In addition to implementing Autodesk Build, IMAGINiT has assisted Bowen with the proper usage and administration of their Autodesk Flex licensing as well as the selection and purchase of reality capture hardware and software.

“Our IMAGINiT account manager is our go-to person for all Autodesk and technology-related questions. Regardless of the topic, he is able to bring in an IMAGINiT expert to help,” said Jared. “This relationship saves us time and allows us to confidently move forward, knowing we will always get accurate information, and not a sales pitch.”

C2AE Trusts IMAGINiT with BIM Management Services

For several years, the Building division within C2AE successfully followed a BIM-management-by-committee approach to making decisions on procedures, standards, and best practices. The company’s designers and engineers would meet in person or online, discuss the options, and determine next steps. As the company’s team grew in size and experience level, coming to a consensus became more difficult. C2AE recognized the need to select one person to be the point person responsible for gathering and evaluating all the opinions and deciding which to select and implement.

Swinterton Delivers Value and Achieves ROI with Leica RTC360 Scanner

When renovating buildings, Swinerton starts with as-built measurements provided by clients. Because those drawings rarely include updates, Swinerton relied on their architects to manually measure spaces, put those measurements into Autodesk Revit, and provide PDFs of the information to the designers, who used them as the starting point for renovations. Swinerton started getting laser scans of structures at the beginning of renovation projects using external companies to perform the scanning. “The laser scanners led to great improvements,” said Matt Zwetzig, VD&C Manager, Swinerton. “Measurements were gathered in a fraction of the time, teams knew they were working with accurate information, plans were created faster, correct parts were ordered the first time, and the parts fit as expected.” With business growing and timelines shortening, Matt determined it was time to compare costs for hiring external providers versus purchasing a scanner and completing the work in house.

Massilly North America Automates Processes with Fusion 360 Manage

In 2015, Massilly North America reached out to Autodesk for support on their product lifecycle management (PLM) software, Fusion 360 Manage (previously known as Autodesk PLM 360), which is critical to the company’s day-to-day operations. Autodesk connected Massilly North America with IMAGINiT, and the IMAGINiT PLM team answered questions on specific issues, consulted on workflow improvements, and shared best practices.
