Triggerfish's Seal Team Artists Focused Solely on Crafting the Best Artwork They Could and Left all the Complicated Heavy Lifting to their Tools

Triggerfish's Seal Team Artists Focused Solely on Crafting the Best Artwork They Could and Left all the Complicated Heavy Lifting to their Tools

Customer challenge

Triggerfish is a computer animation film studio based in Cape Town, South Africa and Galway, Ireland. The studio is best known for its award winning animated features.

For their latest feature film, "Seal Team", they decided to completely change their pipeline and create something that would work for their artists. They wanted to leave the artists to focus solely on crafting the best artwork they could, and would leave all the complicated heavy lifting to their tools.

Triggerfish implemented an ‘always rendering’ ideology, which means that at any point in the pipeline, they would be able to “build” a shot/asset and send it to the render farm and view what it will look like at render time.

Project goals

The Customer needed to improve workflow for artists and eliminate manual caching as the production was almost three years in production.

Their pipeline supervisor needed to create a clear method to track, build and update shots.

One of Triggerfish's goals on this feature was that they needed to create a parallel pipeline, where they used Autodesk ShotGrid to support a process whereby they could schedule more overlap between different phases of production and reduce the time before any downstream department could start work on any task.

Solution

In order for their ideas to work, Triggerfish needed a database. Autodesk’s ShotGrid is a database with a front-end application that people can access anywhere around the world and suited their needs very well - especially as they moved to become a mostly remote studio.

They are currently using ShotGrid as the core of their pipeline. Every shot has assigned characters/props/sets that their tools read and build with.
With this mentality, production can add or remove assets, change shot lengths, and shading variants that will automatically reflect in the artist’s scenes.

The automatic rendering uploads the latest versions automatically to ShotGrid allowing the directors to view increments and variations on the fly, or even render versions to check how current versions are working within the scene. This has proven the best asset to their pipeline to speed up processes.

Business outcome

Using this method does require every user to have a ShotGrid license, but the time artists are saving on re-caches, re-renders and shot fixes more than makes up the shortfall of the cost to the business. The studio have appreciated the support and service from the Modena Media and Entertainment team over the years.

Mike Buckland, Triggerfish Partner and Producer, comments " As we've taken on more ambitious projects , we have been pleased to see how the Modena M&E team have been able to accommodate our licensing needs as well as supporting our initiatives to encourage the growth of the Animation Industry."

Conclusion

Looking back on this project, the studio had a lot of ups and downs as they tried to break new ground on their pipeline with a lot of different iterations, concepts and theories as they worked toward their goal.

The Triggerfish team is very proud of what they have achieved in the new pipeline. Without Autodesk ShotGrid and its functionality, they don't think they would have been able to achieve it.

K/M2K Saves 2 Hours of Work per Design Review through Better Remote Teamwork with Autodesk BIM360

During the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020, K/M2K Architecture and Interior Design found themselves struggling to navigate remote working during a national lockdown. Traditional methods of file sharing were found inefficient and lacking for a team that needed to communicate a lot of information at a high frequency.

From 2D AutoCAD to Intelligent iLogic-driven 3D Inventor Designs

Palian was using 2D AutoCAD in a primarily 3D dominated field, struggling with collaboration between branches and the length of time it would take to make relatively small changes to designs. Getting drawings and quantities to the sales team for quotation purposes took longer than desired and a lot of manual user calculations and input was still needed, which increased the change of costly "human error" mistakes.

DRA Global takes on Project Delays with Innovative use of Technology

DRA Global had to overcome a delay of 25 days over deadline for their Sierra Leone Project, so they needed to find a way to get that time back to avoid running over with this project. The impact of this was on their future expansion projects within the same mine, in Sierra Leone, which would be double the size of the original project.
