Train Service Capabilities with New Rails and Stations

Train Service Capabilities with New Rails and Stations

Customer challenge

COWI AB operates as an engineering consulting firm including construction engineering, electrical and automation, infrastructure, and environmental. The team identified challenges in ensuring their customers' project data was accurate with efficient collaboration given the variety of document exchanges and models, cross-functional team communication required, and the many different people and roles involved along the way.

Project goals

For example, a client project required a 8 km double track railway, incorporating a 6 km long drill and blast tunnel under the central Gothenburg station. Three new stations in the city were required: Gothenburg Central, Haga and Korsvägen. The link will increase train service capacity with direct routes.

Solution

To meet the unique business challenges, the client has begun using the Autodesk AEC Design, BIM and Construction Cloud products with consulting services from Autodesk Solution Provider AEC AB to be more efficient in the project management and delivery.

Business outcome

Collaboration on and preparing for weekly BIM Coordination and Project Delivery Meetings have been greatly enhanced. Ability to keep weekly deadlines were improved, and late deliveries and work over weekends have been significantly reduced from “often” to "hardly ever". Onsite use of paper drawings and getting the latest information at hand when needed is still a challenge – but with this project, a vision of how to work smarter with a common dataset has been set, and subcontractors have started to ask for better digital tools to replace manual work and routines.

Conclusion

This is a large infrastructure project with many stakeholders. It has been a bit unclear who has the responsibility for IT efficiency project-wide. COWI has taken the lead in trying to improve conditions – and has taken initiatives to show alternative work methods based on efficient cloud services and handheld devices. In that way, they have established a more efficient way to handle issues and be able to provide location-based information to the work staff. This project spans most of the city kernel – so the efficiency of the project as a whole is paramount for the public opinion – apart from keeping track of the project burn to be sure milestones are kept and budget is followed.

Smoother Design for Platinan with BIM Collaborate Pro

When Lilla Bommen in Gothenburg gets a new landmark, the project uses a cloud solution where the architects and designers use Autodesk products, Revit and BIM Collaborate Pro to facilitate the flow of information in a really good way. A challenge for the project is the large flow of information and that more meetings are required than usual. An important part of the work is that all collisions are detected already during the design. There will be a lot of meetings and more review meetings than in smaller projects. When we started, we had meetings in place, but today we have completely switched to digital meetings. The challenge will be to handle the information flow so that all adaptations end up in the drawings of the 300 people who are out on the construction site. Of course, we want to avoid collisions being discovered only when it's time to build. Here we get help from the system to find collisions already at the planning stage so that the parties ininvolved can adjust directly.

In recent years, Bjerking has had all his projects, and thus all documents, in the regular Windows Explorer. During the current pandemic, the need for a system solution has increased. With the pandemic, our way of working has changed. Most of us nowadays work remotely from home, which places demands on the way we handle our files and how we work with them. At that point, we have to work via a VPN tunnel and it has made it more vulnerable because VPN does not always work.
