SWA, BIM is Bridging the Gap between Modeling and Detailing

SWA, BIM is Bridging the Gap between Modeling and Detailing

Customer challenge

Architects and Engineers of the projects working in a team on a common design task need to be supported by new advanced collaborative environments that extend functionality of traditional CAD systems by supporting secure communication, collaboration, coordination, as well as sharing of design data. The challenges in the area of collaborative design in project team networks among others concern: Connected different stakeholders from different geographical locations into one central platform. Ability for each enterprise in the design chain to have their own design knowledge and product design processes and use their own software and services. Transitions in the design workflow must bridge the gaps between heterogeneous knowledge, processes, systems, services and ways of working. Change management across the entire design workflow requires many changes and support for iterative adjustments. Collaborative product, process and service engineering must thus be managed across the project.

Project goals

SWA explored collaborations with World’s Best Practices and started using Autodesk tools for BIM implementation. SWA team collaborated with Gensler, USA for the iconic ITC Colombo Mixed Development Project built in Galle Face, Colombo. The Autodesk BIM collaboration improved the communication among Architects, Engineers, Clients, Contractors and other Key Stakeholders involved in the project from different parts of the world. The Mega Development required seamless intricate design coordination and BIM became the mediator intertwining the team as one. That’s because BIM relies on a “Single Source of Truth (SSOT)” system; this means that all of the relevant information—including models, estimates, and design notes—are shared and stored in one collaborative cloud based platform. The data is accessible to the Authorized Project Team Members at any time from different time zones of the world.

Solution

SWA realized Implementing BIM in a project requires a great deal of adaptability from project team as well as change the way employees worked. In 2011 SWA made an investment for training the team in working with new technologies while introducing the new processes. SWA having given relevant BIM training and created BIM Implementation Strategy with International Autodesk BIM Experts while focusing on each stage of transition, evaluate the process, and consistently get feedback from the team.SWA identified BIM team with champions from their group and same time they hired new employees to strengthen the BIM team. During this process, the company started developing standards and document for BIM processes and they started educating all stakeholders about benefit of BIM. SWA BIM team had become more comfortable working with the Collaborative Workflows. SWA realized that it is important to educate their clients about SWA team BIM capabilities and the high benefits with quality deliverables.

Business outcome

Successful adaptation and transformation of the Autodesk Collaborative BIM Process in the organization is saving cost and resources within the organization with greater efficiency and short project lifecycles. Finally, SWA accomplished high quality results becoming a key player in the International Market while winning more comprehensive mega developments.

Conclusion

SWA are using emergent technologies for Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a platform for multi- disciplinary design coordination and real-time BIM collaboration. SWA’s IT infrastructure could be compared with any International Multi-disciplinary Practice. The organization operates on an in-house developed Cloud Computing System. This is extremely beneficial to implement International Collaborations and even timely concepts as work-from-home. SWA have also cultivated the BIM working culture and attitudes among the staff to collaborate, explore skills and to work as a team.
