Success Story

Realtime End User Parametric Modelling

Realtime End User Parametric Modelling

Customer challenge

Signify Australia had developed a module lighting solution that allowed end-users to select from a range of configuration options to achieve a fitting that met their specific requirements. Signify Australia approached Tentech to develop a solution that provided the user interface and backend solution to automate the output of the required consumer and engineering documentation.

Project goals

The customer required a user friendly way for end users to customize complex luminaires, and that the process automatically output all deliverables required for both the customer and the manufacturing team.

The solution had to be flexible to enable many types of luminaires to be configured through the same platform, with varying levels of complexity

The introduction of customisable luminaires was an initiative to differentiate Signify Australia from their competitors and the solution had to support and elevate the offer.

Solution

Tentech developed a solution with the following components:

Autodesk Dynamics 365: Signify Australia uses Autodesk Dynamics 365 as a Product Information Management System, and for this solution was the source of the configurable product parameters (e.g. mounting type, colour temperature, dimming options, sensor type options etc) and product assets (product photography, product descriptions and marketing features and benefits)

Autodesk Inventor: Inventor was utilises for the parametric modelling of the lighting solutions and Inventors API was then utilised to process parameters entered by end users through the web based interface and generate the 3D model, 2D drawings and Bill of Material – all of which represented the exact configuration options selected by the end user – which were returned to the web interface, available to download by the end user.

Autodesk Forge/ Autodesk Platform Services: The 3D model within the web interface was presented to the end user without the need for specialized software or powerful computing hardware. The end user was able to interact with the 3D models to support the buying decision.

Business outcome

This solution was an Australia first in the lighting industry. It provided a unique buying experience for Signify Australia’s customers that differentiated them from other lighting providers in the market.

The modular lighting solution meant that Signify Australia was able to provide bespoke lighting solutions to their customers without needing to engineer each variant. This meant the engineering team was able to focus more on developing new solutions, and less on supporting existing solutions.

Conclusion

The solution has been embraced in the Australian market, with discussions with the European business to retrofit it to their 3D printing business where 3D printed luminaires that are produced from recycled or mass-balanced bio-circular material to empower consumers to contribute to a circular economy.
