PowerMILL supporting growth at Nepean

PowerMILL supporting growth at Nepean

Customer challenge

Nepean Engineering & Innovation is one of Australia’s leading privately owned engineering, mining services and industrial manufacturing organizations. It offers unique capabilities to deliver high value, innovative, and sustainable solutions in support of the world’s leading mining, construction, and transport companies. First opening in 1974, it has been over 47 years of continuous innovation, hard work, and a willingness to tackle difficult projects that has earned Nepean Engineering & Innovation an enviable reputation. With continuous investment in equipment, facilities, people and R&D activities the capabilities of Nepean have continued to grow, employing over 1100 1500 people across five continents. The challenge of continually compressed delivery schedules, advancements in machine tool technology, and an ever-shrinking talent pool led Nepean Engineering & Innovation to look at it’s CAM programming department for improvements.

Project goals

With continued growth there was a developing need to boost productivity, and capability, from Nepean Engineering & Innovation’s fleet of machining centres. Combined with the decision to purchase a multi-function Mazak machining centre meant Nepean was looking for a Autodesk CAM solution that would enable them to efficiently machine the progressively more complex designs being developed by the engineering and development team. The addition of a Mazak Integrex e 670H ii provided the perfect opportunity to test the capabilities of Autodesk PowerMILL, and DMT, to deliver to Nepean the products and services needed to get the most from the machine. “The new Mazak is a real game changer for us” offered Karl, “as it allows us to do more complex jobs in a single setup, with the obvious benefits being quality and speed.”

Solution

Karl Zoeller, the workshop manager, was tasked with the challenge of sourcing a new CAM system. Mr Zoeller had used a variety of CAM systems over the years, and years and was impressed with the industry feedback from other Autodesk PowerMILL users. “I kept hearing about Autodesk PowerMILL’s capabilities, with one consistent comment that anything was possible.” Karl stated. “The other thing I heard was the local support was outstanding, with DMT having deep product knowledge having represented the Autodesk PowerMILL product since 2001.” Autodesk PowerMILL’s functionality, which now offers turning as well as milling operations, allows all toolpaths to be combined into a single project. This offers increased efficiencies as a programmer is able to generate the NC code, as well as simulate and verify all within a single window.

Business outcome

The combination of the machine capabilities, as well as Autodesk PowerMILL’s programming tools, form an important part of Nepean Engineering & Innovation’s strategy to broaden its service offering to its customers. In particular, to gain more work in precision engineering applications in the support of its large Defence, Research, Manufacturing and Mining Customers. “There are a lot of one-off components along with large production runs to meet some very unique needs,” offered Karl, “and with Autodesk PowerMILL we’re now very comfortable being able to commit to tight deadlines as we know the parts will come off the machine correctly the first time.”

Conclusion

Since the deployment of Autodesk PowerMILL the team at Nepean Engineering & Innovation has already seen marked improvements in their programming, and cycle, times. “I’m looking forward to seeing what jobs will hit our floor next, as we’re now able to confidently and quickly machine extremely complex parts” offered Karl. “I can see Autodesk PowerMILL being a key driver for our next phase of growth in the machine shop.”

Broadband Tooling continued growth with PowerMILL

The Company Broadband Tooling, established in the outer Sydney suburb of Prestons in 2003, was started with the aim of supporting local packaging companies with tooling, and toolmaking services. Having this established itself as a niche supplier to a local industry, and as a testament to the quality of workmanship, customers were continually asking for a broader range of services. With the benefit of a small and enthusiastic team of multi-skilled individuals, Broadband Tooling was able to meet this challenge with a training and improvement program.
