Migration to Autodesk Vault Workgroup 2021

Migration to Autodesk Vault Workgroup 2021

Customer challenge

Moonen Yachts is a company that designs, sells, and builds yachts. Within the company, they use Autodesk Inventor to model and manufacture the interiors of these yachts. They store all these designs in Autodesk Vault Basic. The Autodesk Vault and the server they were using were both outdated, and they were eager to move to a new environment. However, they ran into several problems. No migration was possible due to an old Windows environment; no additional server for migration was possible due to a lack of total space on the server environments; and no backup was possible for transferring due to insufficient disk space on the current server. If Moonen Yachts would continue to work like this, they would soon run out of space in the Autodesk Vault for their files and backups. It was necessary for them to migrate the Autodesk Vault, but they had limited resources to solve these problems. They were in a tight spot and asked for help from Autodesk Solution Provider ICN Solutions.

Project goals

The goal of the project was that Moonen Yachts would be able to use their (new) Autodesk Vault without any worries. To achieve this, they would eventually need to work in a new environment with a newer version of Autodesk Vault and with more disk space.

Solution

ICN Solutions started thinking about a suitable solution for Moonen Yachts. Simply migrating to a new Autodesk Vault didn't work because they were still working on an old server. Therefore, new software had to be installed on the server first. Ultimately, it was decided to start completely "fresh". The plan was to first download all the data and store it in a central environment as an archive. Then the old environment was terminated, and a new environment was set up with Vault Workgroup in the space that had become available. This Vault environment is immediately filled with the necessary data from the archive. Moonen Yachts responded positively to the proposal and the planned solution.

Business outcome

Data was successfully transferred from the old server with Autodesk Vault Basic (version 2014) to a new server with the new version, Autodesk Vault Workgroup (version 2021). ICN Solutions first terminated the old environment and then successfully transferred the necessary data to the new environment and the new version of Autodesk Vault. Vault Workgroup with lifecycles, document management, revision management, and viewers in production, have also been implemented. Older projects were kept out of the Autodesk Vault and stored as an archive, leaving more room for ongoing projects. After the migration, ICN Solutions provided all employees of Moonen Yachts with an explanation about the new Vault so that everyone was aware of the new software and product data management solution.

Conclusion

ICN Solutions had to think about a suitable solution in the beginning, but Moonen Yachts is very satisfied with the final solution and the results. They can now work worry-free in their new environment with their new Vault. The cooperation went well, and Moonen Yachts can continue working with Autodesk Inventor and the new Vault product data management solution.

Search Made Easier with Programmed Tool in AutoCAD

Thermo Electric Instrumentation is a company that makes temperature sensors, mainly for the oil and gas industry. All sensors they make are customer specified and drawn in AutoCAD. Thermo Electric was still working with an outdated AutoCAD version in 2016: AutoCAD 2000. This version was no longer supported and had to be updated. However, they had attached a search system that they had written themselves years earlier, and the person who made this system was no longer employed by Thermo Electric. They had to install a new AutoCAD version, but they also wanted to take this self-written system with them.

From 2D Design to 3D Modeling for Agricultural Industries

Van Dun Advies mainly works for agricultural companies and industry in rural areas, designing stables and commercial buildings, and realizing them thereof, for example. Van Dun Advies started 3D modeling in addition to 2D CAD drawing since customers asked for 3D models, because these clearly show what has been designed and will be built. A transition to 3D modeling appeared to be difficult, because the designers did not have software and skills for efficient 3D modeling at their disposal.
