Maverick Industries Deploy Solutions to Foster Innovation in Industrial Container Design and Manufacturing

Customer challenge

Specialized in quality steel fabrication and manufacturing, MAVERICK INDUSTRIES caters to a wide range of customers and projects, from residential custom stairs or railing, to commercial contractors with large scale structural steel or miscellaneous metal needs. One of MAVERICK’s divisions, INTERSTEEL, has been blessed with substantial growth, since 1995. INTERSTEEL designs and manufactures industrial containers and equipment for waste, recycling, and material handling, built to take on the harshest conditions, and withstand the test of time. In the wake of increasing demand for their products from the construction, commercial, recycling and waste transportation industries, INTERSTEEL expanded to a 11,000 sq. ft. facility in 2015. Their purpose: provide quality manufactured products that benefits not only the necessity of their customers but also the environmental needs in our world. Their challenge: get sales and engineering teams to work closely while increasing output.

Project goals

When Roy Dyck joined the Design & Engineering team in 2018, his mission was to change how things were designed and made; find time-saving practices while creating an environment that would foster innovation; and improve workflow efficiency from design, to approval, to production. In Roy’s perspective, this meant: 1) Moving away from subcontracting design to external firms and eliminating all hand drawings. 2) Finding a mechanical engineering software package to make better designs, test them, and speed up modeling and detailing process. 3) Deploying a solution that supports multiple people working on the same project and prevents team members from overwriting each other’s work as iterations where made.

Solution

Based on personal experience and a short consultation with Redcage (acquired by Graitec in early 2021) was all it took to confirm that migrating the entire team to an Autodesk Inventor-based solution was the best decision for the company’s 3D mechanical design, simulation, and documentation needs. In 2021, Graitec helped to take the transition a step further by deploying and configuring Vault Basic (included with Inventor in the Autodesk Product Design and Manufacturing Collection), and training users. Vault Basic was to help with file management, data creation and documentation organization.

Business outcome

There is no doubt that in terms of business outcomes, changing how things were designed and made resulted in: 1) Increased employee satisfaction with modern tools to do their job easier and better. 2) Efficiency of the design team, now able to take on more and varied projects. 3) Enhanced quality of designs and information sent to production. 4) Increase in production throughput. 5) Innovation, as it is much easier for the team to model new ideas, test concepts and develop better solutions for lids, doors, systems to keep animals out, and more.

Conclusion

"With my experience and background, I absolutely knew what type of tools we needed. I also knew that change can be unsettling for people who are used to doing things a certain way. And this is where Graitec’s PDM team had an impact. Vault Basic setup and training was done efficiently and helped get everyone up and running in a matter of hours. They are always a phone call or email away when someone needs technical help. They are quick to respond, knowledgeable and find a solution every time. They are a partner we can count on." - Roy Dyck, Engineering Designer, Maverick Industries
