Licence Optimisation Project For A Global Engineering Consultant

Licence Optimisation Project For A Global Engineering Consultant

Customer challenge

KONGSBERG specialises in developing advanced technologies, to provide extreme performance for extreme conditions. Working together as a global team, it has created an integrated portfolio of solutions, for businesses, partners and nations operating from the depths of the sea; to outer space; to the digital frontier. It uses many of the Autodesk products throughout its global team, across different divisions, business units and countries. As Autodesk retires subscription plans based on serial numbers and moves to a model where software entitlement is based on named users, Kongsberg faced the challenge of transitioning most of its users to this new model. As a long-standing customer of Autodesk, it had selected multi-user concurrent licencing historically, and over time it had based its procurement, software asset management and deployment processes on this model.

Project goals

The asset management team at Kongsberg viewed the requirement to transition its multi-user subscriptions to named-user ones as an opportunity to review the organisation’s current Autodesk software estate and make sure it was sized and optimised for the future. Furthermore, Kongsberg had acquired a number of companies in recent years, some of which had brought their own substantial Autodesk software estates with them. The overall goal of this software estate optimisation project was to establish the technology needs of the global organisation and to align the investment in Autodesk named-user subscriptions with each business units’ specific requirements.

Solution

The existing combined Autodesk estate was complex and had grown organically over time as a result of acquisitions and different local and centralised purchasing approaches. Although predominately users of core manufacturing products such as Inventor and Vault, parts of the business were using AEC products including Revit. In addition, the way that the products had been purchased meant that there was a mixture of individual product licences, legacy suites of product licences and modern Autodesk Industry Collections. Cadline delivered an investment recommendation using a proprietary Autodesk Subscription optimisation solution alongside three key datasets. The multi-user licence usage data provides an accurate record of product usage broken down by user, product name, version and licence type over an appropriate time span. The installation data gives us an indication of the reach of the products and a targeted user survey allows us to understand how and why the products are being used.

Business outcome

Based on our investment recommendation, Kongsberg transitioned from its existing multi-user Autodesk estate to a highly optimised named-user one by selecting the most appropriate purchasing option for each individual user. Where a user regularly used two or more products within their workflows, they would be allocated an Autodesk Industry Collection. Similarly, if their use was limited to an AutoCAD based product, they would be allocated an AutoCAD including Specialized Toolset licence. All other software, including legacy versions and redundant or duplicated licences were removed from every computer within the organisation. Some of the analysis we carried out was qualitative and allowed us to recommend alternative Autodesk products, more suited to the user’s activities. This could include cloud-based solutions that enable a more collaborative workflow or model viewers where an authoring tool was not required.

Conclusion

The transition to Autodesk named-user licencing has proved to be an opportunity rather than a risk for Kongsberg as a result of the support provided by our team of product and subscription specialists. By starting the project early, understanding the engineering activities delivered by Kongsberg and with a detailed view of how the current licences were historically deployed and used, we were able to deliver a highly optimised Autodesk named-user environment. The process we use to manage these transformation projects is highly scalable whilst acknowledging the needs of individual users with diverse working practices, within organisations of all sizes. Our close partnership with Kongsberg means that we continue to have a deep insight into their future direction and how our implementation of Autodesk software will support its ongoing success.

Sale Layout, 3D Visualisation

This customer is leading the transition towards a 100% renewable energy future. As an Energy System Integrator, it understands, design, builds and services optimal power systems for future generations. Its offering includes ultra-flexible internal combustion engine-based power plants, hybridized solar power plants, energy storage & integration solutions, as well as gas to power systems. The technical sales team at the customer believed that the existing design communication methodology used during the sales process was significantly extending the early stages of the project. Technical design elements were typically communicated using 2D drawings even when some of the early design activities had been carried out in 3D. This resulted in a disconnected workflow and a less than optimal experience for their clients.

Managing Change Effectively: How Autodesk and Cadline Helped Smitsair to Automate its Design Process, Free Up Time and Support its Business Growth Initiatives

Cadline was originally introduced to Smitsair to conduct a review of their design, configurator and data management systems and processes. It was established that there was a product configurator in place in Smitsair’s ISAH system, but it provided 2D drawings which were generated with scripts that could no longer be maintained. In addition, to process non-standard orders meant an engineer had to manually edit the flat patterns in 2D which is much more difficult than if these could be edited using a 3D model. Drawings and project files were linked in the ERP system by using shortcuts within specified tabs, but the files itself were stored in Windows folders with no version or revision control. For one-off projects the team used 3D modelling software, but this was no longer supported so the Smitsair team needed to switch to a 3D tool that was capable of both driving design automation and producing one-off projects on the same platform.
