How to Manage 11,000 Radio Base Stations Thanks to BIM

How to Manage 11,000 Radio Base Stations Thanks to BIM

Customer challenge

La SIA SpA is an architecture and engineering company and represents one of the great Italian industrial groups with 150 staff members based in nine offices in Italy and one abroad. It provides its customers, partners and collaborators with excellent services based on integrated design and cutting-edge research and development activities. The expertise of La SIA SpA in the development of digital processes for the management of infrastructure assets has grown a lot in the last four years. Starting in 2017, they successfully produced and delivered to their customers over 11,000 sites that were created using Autodesk Revit as the primary BIM design tool. Each Revit model contains a large dataset of geometry and data information. The company invested months of activity into researching and developing BIM standards and guidelines to reach this level. This fundamental planning approach has led to the definition of the rules of modelling and construction for digital objects.

Project goals

All projects taken on are approached with experience and sensitivity to the customer's needs. In the project to digitise telecommunications infrastructure, there wasn't just the challenge of planning and developing processes and guidelines, nor creating Revit families and models. The final goal was to provide the customer with a tool that would allow the management of all their assets, both design and maintenance. This includes planning inspections, structural checks, and radio analysis of the electromagnetic field. This project has been ongoing for almost four years and has been led by a team of specialists with design, project management, asset management and information technology skills. Therefore, the key challenges were to effectively organise resources and partners and plan successfully to develop a web application, which would become the primary tool for the team and customers. This would help make the management of real estate assets as efficient and productive as possible.

Solution

We came up with the name AIM360, which stands for Asset Information Management. This is a web application developed over almost four years. The management platform is created ad hoc and then integrated with Autodesk Forge and BIM 360, representing state-of-the-art web development solutions-oriented to building information management. AIM360 is a tool consisting of a series of modules, each at the service of the needs of the customer and their partners. The 3D viewer module, inherent in maps, the horizontal and vertical search module and the RFI are just some of the web application components, which today is in its third version. Over the years, the AIM360 has been updated and integrated several times with new features. The latest update involved the strategic and architectural transition of the platform to an API-first approach. This method has allowed for a revolution in the application's structure.

Business outcome

Starting from the family creation and modelling activities, which involved around 30 full-time BIM specialists and two BIM coordinators, one BIM manager and one R&D manager. Over 18 months, this team oversaw the production of over 2,600 families and types and more than 11,000 Revit models. Considering these high numbers, we have spent time developing scripts to automate those modelling activities considered repetitive. These scripts have simplified data entry and modelling activities. For example, the placement of both plant and structural families and other scripts for site validation has also been developed.

Conclusion

In practice, once the modelling of a site is completed, model-checking activities are carried out using scripts in Autodesk Dynamo. This has increased efficiency by speeding up the process and reducing errors caused during manual checks. Today, all the resources for validating the sites make use of the scripts to complete these controlled activities with precision and reduced processing time.

Adoption of Automation to Reduce Time Spent on Design Tasks and Reduce Errors

Visobath is dedicated to the manufacture and marketing of bathroom furniture, and thanks to effort and innovation, has become a benchmark in the furniture industry. Since its inception in Visobath, they have worked to offer the best solutions for the bathroom of their customers with innovative and quality products and good service and customer support. In the Visohome Group, a business group to which Visobath belongs, Covid-19 has significantly impacted working. They decided to review all jobs, establish protocols to guarantee the safety of their workers and, fundamentally, promote the use of telematics tools. The biggest challenge they have faced at the organizational level has been the adaptation to remote teamwork, so they have implemented tools so that the computer can stay connected.

Enhanced Data Security for the Manufacturer Sollich KG

With 450 employees, Sollich KG is a family-owned company based in Bad Salzuflen who designs and manufactures machines for temperature control, covering, decorating, and cooling chocolate. It sounds a bit like paradise; Sollich KG from Bad Salzuflen deals almost exclusively with the production of chocolates. However, the mechanical engineering company does not focus on the enjoyment of these fine products, rather on the design of the production systems. The family business has over 100 years of history, and Sollich KG machines can now be found in chocolate factories worldwide. The machines and production lines are designed in 3D with Autodesk Inventor to ensure this world-renowned quality. The 35 designers currently use Productstream Professional (PSP) as drawing management software. However, with no updates for PSP since 2017 and thus no possibility to use newer software versions of programmes such as Inventor, those responsible decided to switch to Autodesk Vault a few years ago.
