DIGITALIZATION OF UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS

DIGITALIZATION OF UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS

Customer challenge

The Rey Juan Carlos University opted for the digitization of its properties in 2017. Since then, a work project has been carried out to compile the needs of the different services of the university. As a result of this study, a BIM White Paper was prepared in order to standardize the creation of digital twins, both for existing and new buildings. This White Paper is the cornerstone of the URJC's Digital Models Information Management System. The university is now in the process of certification under the UNE-EN ISO 19650 standard for existing buildings.

Project goals

The fundamental challenges were to test if the digital models made were compatible with the representation of information in lists and graphs, and to see how to represent the data recorded by the IoT nodes. Like any pilot project, doubts or difficulties have arisen, especially focused on how to obtain the data from the model but, with the collaboration of all, they have been quickly solved. The different phases in which the project has been divided, basically, have been 5: Phase 1: Audit of the digital model of the building selected for the pilot: Móstoles Campus Management Building. Phase 2: Connection with the common data environment formed by Autodesk BIM 360 Docs where asset information is stored. Phase 3: Development of reports to visualize the asset data of the model. Phase 4: Connection with the IoT Database where the variable records from the IoT nodes are stored. Phase 5: Development of reports.

Solution

With Autodesk Revit, the digital twins have been made and with BIM 360 Docs a Common Data Environment (CDE) has been created where the information of buildings and digital models can be efficiently managed. No cost reduction was sought since it was a Public University; however, the most important outcome was the simplicity and ease of learning the tools.

Business outcome

The Power BIM project constitutes another step towards the ‘Smart Campus’ and the digitization of the assets that the Rey Juan Carlos University has for its asset management and its teaching use in a more efficient way. Digitization is already a reality, not a project for the future. The use of digital twins in the administration is the way to optimize the properties for what it contributes to the different users: reforms, maintenance, implantations, IT, prevention, etc.). These twins allow the virtual simulation of what will later be done in real life, thus avoiding surprises. In universities, these digital twins provide new options in teaching, being able to use them to show students the facilities of a building, architecture, environments for games, development of applications with Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and more.

Conclusion

Rey Juan Carlos University has opted for the digitization of its buildings as one more step on its path towards sustainability and energy efficiency. The digital twin will be the center of the Smart Campus, becoming the container for all the information related to the building (assets, projects, contracts, real-time data - IoT, and more). The university opted for solutions provided by CAD & LAN as a regular collaborator with the university. Among these solutions is Autodesk Revit as digital modeling software and Autodesk BIM 360 Docs as a tool to build the Common Data Environment.

Arpada Reduces Safety Issue Tracking Time by 75% with Autodesk BIM 360

Arpada was using disconnected tools such as email, instant messaging, and spreadsheets with no traceability for issue management. The lack of a transparent digital process, and the inability to collaborate with project stakeholders was leading to loss of data, miscommunication, and overall inefficiencies.
