Autodesk BIM360 Facilitates Young+Richards to Deliver a Large-scale State House Project for Kāinga Ora

Autodesk BIM360 Facilitates Young+Richards to Deliver a Large-scale State House Project for Kāinga Ora

Customer challenge

Young+Richards architectural practice operates between the worlds of architecture, interiors, retail, master planning, project delivery and development.

Established in 2007, Young+Richards commenced as a design studio bringing together the collective experience of Elvon Young, Harriet Pilkington (nee Richards), and the late Bruce Stephen Young. Young+Richards uniquely combines a passion for the detail of the interior environment as well as large scale exterior and master planning projects, with specialist ability in roll out of systemised architectural documentation.

The major challenge for the customer was for the engagement of all design disciplines to utilise and deliver via Autodesk BIM360 platform, providing for a fully collaborated design process. Another challenge was that the Infrastructure Design were carried out prior to the detailed design commencement.

Project goals

By implementing this project, the client wanted to ensure efficient design coordination and collaboration and maintenance of design intent. The goal was to increase efficiency for design Integration, optimisation of documentation process and optimisation of construction staging. Additionally, they also wanted design visualisations to present solutions to identified design and compliance challenges. By implementing this project, the client also wanted construction cost management.

Solution

The client used Autodesk BIM360 Platform to consume and publish design packages between design teams, ensuring maintained design coordination and collaboration. Autodesk file format compatibility benefited when incorporating infrastructure and survey data into design, Increasing efficiency for design integration.

Autodesk Revit templates were used to setup application of established documentation package format and standards, which helped in optimisation of documentation process. Autodesk BIM360 collaboration was utilised by collaborators to develop a construction management plan and streamline build process/sequence that helped in optimisation of construction staging.

Autodesk Revit view and rendering tools were used to present design solutions with clarity, which facilitated with design visualisations to present solutions to identified design & compliance challenges.

In addition, Autodesk Revit element properties tool were utilised to quantify specified materials and systems allowing for management and forecasting of construction costs within budget, helping in overall construction cost management.

Business outcome

Autodesk BIM360 Docs was utilised to carry-out and administer quality assurance measures for both internal and external designs at established milestones.

Conclusion

The utilisation of Autodesk BIM360 and the other Autodesk products helped in the Design Presentation, Construction Sequencing, Design Assurance, clash detection, Fabrication and Cost Management. The project on the whole was a huge success.

Designing Functional Industrial and Commercial Products with Accuracy using Autodesk Inventor

The initial challenge is to design with accuracy using Autodesk Inventor while being fully functional. Design for manufacture and testability are crucial aspects of the design process - while most understand design for manufacturing, many overlook the need of design for testability. Design for testability means that the designer knows how to test that a product is optimally functional - to be able to prove through testing, during the manufacture and assembly process, that every component is maximally effective and fully complies with the specifications. Design for testability and strict quality control are a standard part of ARIDs design process, ensuring that each unit produced is of the highest standard.

How Revit Streamlined the Workflow for the Westminster School Learning Hubs Multistage Project

Working with the Westminster School’s approach to teaching and learning, the shape, layout and relationships between spaces became more complex when compared to the traditional design of learning spaces. This meant that coordination within the Design Team was important and being able to explore and refine ideas through a 3D medium meant we could be assured that our outcomes would be cohesive for the interior and exterior of the building and aligned with the school’s pedagogical practices.

COSTCO – New Zealand’s Largest Bulk Retail Facility

MSC was tasked with the design and construction of a large and complex structure - New Zealand’s largest bulk retail site, a multi-level facility built over unstable ground. Site characteristics include a car park level and fuel station on-site. The structure includes three levels – 1 car park level and 2 shopping levels approximately 40,000 sq/m.
