ACIL - BIM Adoption to Reduce Wastage Caused from Rework

Customer challenge

Ahluwalia Contracts India Limited is a five (5) decade old company, listed on all major domestic stock exchanges.

With its steady growth, Ahluwalia Contracts is a leading EPC Company which happens to be the only “debt-free” construction company amongst its peers involved in construction of complex specialized buildings across the country.

Key company facts include the following:

  • Ahluwalia Contract’s order book stands at over Rs. 14,000 crores, with project execution in 12 States catering to both private and public sector clients
  • Ahluwalia Contracts is constructing some of the largest healthcare projects aggregating to over one (1) Crore square feet of area having a construction value of over Rs. 6000 crores; once completed, these hospitals will have close to 6000 beds with world-class health facilities.
  • ACIL is playing a pivotal role in infrastructure development of the country by executing construction projects across the spectrum of the building industry.

To upkeep with their mission of delivering the most iconic buildings on time, they chose to leverage the power of digital construction to further reinforce their processes.

With the majority of the projects in the portfolio being design and build, Ahluwalia Contracts felt the need of creating the digital ecosystem within the organization to ensure the right information is available to the right person at the right time.

Following were the primary challenges that were initially faced by Ahluwalia Contacts:

  • Large numbers of hard clashes on site which resulted in rework.
  • Rework causing wastage of time, material and manpower.
  • Access to structured information at a common place.
  • Optimized design iterations used to take time.
  • Assessment of quantities on time for design and build projects.
  • Time and effort taken to communicate information on design change.

Project goals

  • To eliminate major interdisciplinary clashes on site.
  • To have design information access to everyone and to keep the concerned stakeholders informed in real-time.
  • Design iteration for effective design development.
  • Reconciliation of Quantities.
  • Timely input and automated tracking of design development.

Solution

  • Using Autodesk BIM360 or Build to access all design data and interact with the same in the Cloud.
  • Extracting BOQ from the BIM model developed.
  • Performing Clash Detection on Navisworks to develop CSD (Combined Services Drawings).
  • Using modelling software solutions to explore design iterations during design development.

Business outcome

  • BIM helped us in developing clash-free combined interdisciplinary drawings which resulted in reduction to wastage of material, increase in manpower productivity, and less rework on site.
  • Design management in the cloud helped us in tracking design development in real-time by decreasing the response time to RFI’s and RFA’s.
  • Reconciliation of major quantities.
  • BIM helped us to implement lean practices and reduce wastages on our projects.
  • Autodesk CDE has helped us connect all our stakeholders irrespective of their location or role.

Conclusion

With the implementation of CDE and the design workflow being embedded in tool, the design development process got more efficient with the access to structured information and with the RFA’s and RFI’s getting closed on time. The clash-free construction not only helped in saving on wastage of resources but also helped to expedite the construction on-site. Autodesk Solution Provider Capricot was instrumental during the entire implementation process: from the adoption to the training phase. Also, for all technical support throughout the project.

Truck Measurement System and Sampling Collection System

With Prefect Hydraulics Pvt Ltd, the Application had challenges in Assembly and Integration. Aggregates from various Parties were used to make this Hydraulic System. The necessity was to have a mock assembly before we take up the actual assembly. Autodesk products helped us to visit and make a 3D drawing which helped us to visualize the Product Assembly and avoid last-minute surprises which could have cost dearly in the Project. We were able to carry out assembly and testing activities much faster and deliver the system on time.

MINERAL PROCESSING EQUIPMENT

The products for which the Autodesk Inventor CAD tool was used were magnetic separators, heavy media drums, centrifuges, and sampler machines. For product development and design, Inventor comes in very handy to determine interferences and eliminate them using the tested and successful model for different sizes without much difficulty. The main advantages are in converting the concept into a design, reviewing the model, making necessary changes, and developing prototypes for testing. The biggest advantage is quality of work and time savings.

KAAPPAAN [Tamil] [Feature Film]

KAAPPAAN is an action thriller film from 2019 in the Indian Tamil language. It was written and directed by K. V. Anand, co-written by Pattukkottai Prabakar, and produced by Lyca Productions. The Film was released in theatres on 20 September 2019 and emerged as a commercial success by grossing ₹100 crores at the box office. However, in the making, the film had presented Firefly Creative Studio with a challenge to capture and enliven the attack of a genetically altered locust swarm on village crops at a time when the farmers were preparing to reap the sow. Being centric to the action, it became vital for Firefly Creative Studio to capture the details of the insects in terms of looks, proportions and mechanics.
