As the definition of Building Information Modeling (BIM) evolves and becomes a better-known and established collaboration process in the building design and construction industry, owners increasingly require BIM services from construction managers, architects, and engineering firms. AE/C/CM firms are investing in BIM technologies to help them during bidding, preconstruction, construction, and post-construction. Attendees learn methods and best practices for managing BIM information flows from design phases to building maintenance through a series of scenario-based presentations and case studies. This class also discusses the power of integrating specification writing into the BIM workflow. Upon completion of the class, attendees will have a good understanding of how BIM data evolves from design to construction management stages and eventually to building operation and maintenance.
- List the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of BIM implementation in the building design and construction industry
- Identify current uses of BIM technologies in the architectural, engineering, construction, and building management industry
- Describe best practices for implementing BIM in an integrated work culture or environment
- Define the importance of integrating specification writing with BIM workflow
With over 15 years of experience working in the AEC industry, Vincent Poon is currently the BIM Manager with STV. Along with providing in-house Revit training, Vincent consults directly with project teams to establish methodologies and best practices to ease the transition to Revit. Vincent is a graduate of the University at Buffalo, holding a bachelors degree in architecture.Along with providing directions and strategic leadership to STV's BIM effort, Vincent has developed unique and innovative techniques using a variety of digital tools for design as well as construction management/coordination.
Dareen is a BIM and Project Controls Specialist in STV's Construction Management Department. STV is a full service employee owned A/E/C firm offering engineering, architectural, planning, environmental and construction management services. She received her master's degree and completed her research on automated compliance checking in construction at the University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign. She is currently a BIM and Project Controls Specialist, and involved in the strategic implementation of STV's BIM 456 initiative. She is a user of Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360 Field/Glue and other BIM applications. She focuses on the interoperability of processes and software within project controls to integrate scheduling, estimating, and project tracking functions. She is currently working on two Design-Build projects implementing BIM as a collaborative process with the CM involved at early design stages. She is also member of the CMAA National Emerging Technologies Committee.
